GREATER Manchester Police (GMP) officers cycled 130 miles for the Christie this weekend, raising almost £2,500 for the Manchester-based cancer centre.

The 15-strong team from GMP’s Force Events Section, cycled from Leeds to Liverpool on 13 bikes and one tandem, which was ridden by Sup Bryan Lawton and Ch Ins Steve Howard.

One of the main organsiers, Sgt John Clee, said: “My wife contracted cancer four years ago and quite a few of us have been affected by it, so we thought it was a very worthwhile cause.”

He said they chose the challenge as it was something officers of all abilities could take part in and said the whole team managed to complete the grueling two day cycle.

Each team member made a £100 donation each and the team has yet to auction off some football shirts and balls, so Sgt Clee hopes the cycle the total will reach £4,000.
