AN injured hedgehog was rescued by an eight-year-old Stretford boy.

Alex Birch, of Henshaw Street, noticed the small hedgehog at the end of his road last week, but when he approached the animal he found it was alive but not moving.

His dad, Eric, considered taking it to the nearest park and releasing it, but decided the best course of action was to contact the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).

Eric was advised that hedgehogs do not usually venture out during the day time and, as such, there must have been something wrong with it.

On BHPS advice, Alex and Eric placed the animal inside a cardboard with a supply of water, cat food and a hot water bottle, and took it to the house of a BHPS member.

The hedgehog is now said to be making a good recovery and will be lloked after in an incubator over winter until it is ready to be released back into the wild in the spring.
