Warning over Trafford diabetes increase
8:40am Sunday 14th October 2012 in News
THE number of people living with diabetes in Trafford is expected to rise by the end of the decade, according to a new analysis by Diabetes UK.
Figures show that 12,700 people currently living in Trafford have the illness, with this figure expected to rise in 2020 to 14,700 and by 700,000 across the UK in the same year.
Diabetes UK said that the vast majority of the new cases would be Type 2, which can often be prevented by making healthy lifestyle changes and losing weight.
The charity has warned of the financial pressure on the NHS, which already spends 10 per cent of its entire budget treating the condition.
Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: “If this projected increase becomes a reality, it would be a calamity for the healthcare system and a disaster for public health.”
The charity is calling for more resources to be put towards preventing Type 2 diabetes.
