Trafford Council undecided about relaxing planning rules

TRAFFORD Council is still to make a decision on the Government’s policy to relax planning regulations.

The aim of new planning rules is to boost house building and remove unnecessary costs and delays.

There has been opposition from councils across the country to David Cameron’s plans to allow large extensions in homeowners’ back gardens with going through the planning process.

But councils are able to override government decrees on such issues if they see fit.

Trafford executive councillor Michael Hyman said: “The rules that restrict an extension to no more than 50 percent of a property’s garden will remain.

“The relaxation of planning rules does not apply in protected areas such as conservation areas.”

The council wants to give assurances that there will be a consultation period to take in residents’ views of the proposal before coming to a conclusion.
