Man drowned in Altrincham canal

AN elderly man drowned in a canal near Seamons Road, Altrincham, on Tuesday.


Ambulance, fire and police services were all called to the scene at around 10.20 am, following reports of a man floating in the water.


Ambulance staff retrieved the man, believed to be in his seventies or eighties, from the canal and gave him CPR, but he was not conscious or breathing.


He was taken to Wythenshawe hospital where he later died due to a cardiac arrest caused by drowning.


The incident occurred at a time when there was very heavy rain, the fire service water incident unit was called but was not used.


A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said there is not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
