Sale Moor Tesco Express plan sparks protests

A NEW Tesco Express is planned for Sale Moor, next door to the existing Norris Road Food Store.
The new Tesco is earmarked for the site of the Piper, on Norris Road, which closed six years ago.
However, Food Store owner, Jasminda Singh, is furious that the supermarket giant is intending to apply for 8am–11pm alcohol license.
Mr Singh said: “We’ve got a license until 11pm but we close at 9.30pm because we know the disturbances selling alcohol late at night can cause.
“It’s in the middle of a housing estate, there’s a zebra crossing and a school nearby, which will be dangerous because of the articulated lorries Tesco use.”
Ward councillor, Mike Freeman, has also expressed concern and stated that an alcohol licensing application for the Piper Pub site is yet to be received by Trafford Council.
“I feel very sorry for the residents, I don’t see the need for a Tesco when there’s already a shop that is well used and well liked.”
Cllr Freeman added: “I’m extremely angry that the land has been left like this for seven years and it’s a complete blot on the landscape.”
Mr Singh said: “There’s already a Tesco One Stop half a mile down the road and this will be in direct competition to us.”
A spokesman for Tesco said a planning application will be submitted shortly and that an alcohol license will be applied for.
The spokesman added: "The new store will be a great asset to the local area and will bring with it much needed local employment opportunities and bring an empty building back into use.”
