CORONATION Street stars Judy Holt and Tony Hirst accompanied residents of a Hale Barns dementia care community, Sunrise, on the 10k Memory walk at Heaton Park on September 9.

The soap actors brought dementia to the nation’s attention recently when Judy’s character, Elaine Fishwick, developed the condition.

They and Sunrise resident, Dr Ann Johnson, who has early onset dementia, cut the ribbon to commence the walk.

Dr Johnson was recently awarded an honourary doctorate by the University of Bolton for her outstanding contribution to health care.

Emma Jefferson, Sunrise’s director of community relations, said: “The Memory Walk was absolutely fantastic and we really enjoyed ourselves.

“It was a pleasure to meet and chat with Judy and Tony along with Alzheimer's sufferers, their carers and relatives.”

She added: “We were delighted that Ann was given the opportunity to cut the ribbon at the start of the main event and are very proud of her.

The Sunrise team raised £400 for Alzheimer’s UK.
