AN Altrincham woman is swimming the length of the English Channel for charity.
But as Kate Hook, who is originally from Sale, detests cold conditions, unsanitary water and even swimming in the sea, she has decided to complete her challenge in the pool at Total Fitness, Altrincham.
She will swim the 22 miles, which equates to 1,416 lengths of the 25m pool, over 12 weeks and aims to swim 118 lengths per week.
Kate has already swam the first 4.8 miles of the challenge in aid of Aspire, a charity which helps people with spinal cord injuries.
Kate, who has lost five stone over the course of three years, said she had tried many different sports over the years but wanted to find one that truly suited her, so was extremely pleased when she
read about the Aspire Challenge.
“I thought it sounded really interesting and something I could really throw myself into,” said Kate.
“Challenges like this are normally for the really big charities so when I read about Aspire I thought it was such a worthwhile cause.”
Jenny Hague, club manager at Total Fitness, said: “We will be keeping an eye out for Kate at Total Fitness and our staff will be here to support her however they can.”

It’s width not length. The English channel is about 560 km (350 mi) long and varies in width from 240 km (150 mi) at its widest to 34 km (21 mi) in the Strait of Dover
