Trafford woman convicted of benefit fraud

A WOMAN from Old Trafford was convicted of benefit fraud of over £2,000 on July 19 and ordered to carry out unpaid community work.

Madeline Phiri, 52, of St. John’s Road, was found guilty of dishonestly obtaining Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Council Tax Benefit amounting to £2,208.90.

Mrs Phiri had falsely claimed that her partner had left her address and was overpaid ESA and Council Tax Benefit between November 2009 and October 2010 as a result.

In addition to the community work, Mrs Phiri was also ordered to repay all the money she falsely claimed from Trafford Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.
