Former deputy chairman of Altrincham and Sale West Conservative Association joins the Labour Party

A LONG-standing campaigner for Trafford Conservatives has ditched the party - just two months after he stood as a Tory candidate.

Mal Choudhury - former deputy chairman of Altrincham and Sale West Conservative Association - claims he has switched to the Labour Party because the Tories are ‘out of touch’.

Trafford Conservative groups’ deputy leader, Cllr Alex Williams, said he was sorry Mal had left - but the rejected his criticisms.

Explaining his departure from the Conservatives, Mal said: "It’s my belief that this Tory-led Government promised change but has failed to deliver. I have worked for the Conservative Party since 1994. I believed back then that social mobility was possible within the party - even from my background as a child looked after in care in Trafford.

"Sadly I have heard many things from many individuals in the Conservative Party that are contrary to the concept of social mobility.”

Mal, who stood in the Timperley ward in May, added: "The Big Society needs big hearted people to do what’s right for all and in particular for those in the disadvantaged communities. Their contributions and achievements should be valued but the Conservative Party has become hopelessly out of touch. It doesn't understand the needs of hard working families and those most disadvantaged in society.

"I look forward to facing the challenges ahead as a member of the Labour Party campaigning in Trafford to deliver fairness even in tough times."

Stretford and Urmston MP Kate Green said: "I’m very pleased that Mal is joining the Labour Party here in Trafford. His priority is ensuring all young people, including the most disadvantaged, get the best opportunities. I’m looking forward to having his support in campaigning for the young people of Trafford."

Cllr David Acton, Trafford Labour group leader, said: "Mal is a respected campaigner and I’m delighted he’s decided to join the Labour Party. Mal is a joining a Party that will continue to work hard to deliver real change for all."

Conservative group deputy leader, Cllr Williams, hit back: "I was sorry to hear that Mal had decided to resign from the Conservative Party. He was a hard working local activist and will be missed.

"In Trafford we work extremely hard to improve the life chances of residents from all backgrounds. Many of our schools and children's centres in disadvantaged communities are officially rated as 'outstanding' while our children's service 'performs excellently'.

“Although we are never complacent, social mobility in Trafford is far higher than in other parts of the country and we will continue to fight for the best opportunities and outcomes for all our residents."
