URMSTON rockers The Rainband have had chart success with a song created in memory of Marco Simoncelli.
Rise Again, released in tribute of the MotoGP legend, charted at number 3 in the Official UK Top 20 Indie chart and number nine in this week’s UK Official Top 40 Independent Singles Chart.
The single also entered the iTunes download chart in Italy at number 10.
The Rainband played the song, which features former world champion James Toseland on piano, in front of more than 60,000 people at Silverstone’s British Moto GP.
All profits from the record will go directly to the Marco Simoncelli Foundation, a charity set up by Marco’s father, Paolo, to raise funds to build disabled care homes across the world.
The band, formed in 2009, released the song independently after their record label refused to support their idea of giving all profits to the foundation.
Martin Finnigan, lead singer of the band, said: “When we went out to Italy and met the Simoncelli family, we agreed there and then that all profits would be for the foundation. I shook Marco’s father’s hand and made a promise.
“When I came back, our label didn’t see it this way. They started talking about profit and loss sheets so we said, ‘Ok, we’ll do it ourselves…a promise is a promise.’”
The band has already raised £6,500 for the foundation and are about to auction a £12,000 guitar, also in aid of the charity.
Martin added: “To chart top 10 in both Italy and the UK proves that if you do things for the right reasons, good things happen. Great music today, like it always has done, can make amazing things happen."
