MP Graham Brady joined hundreds of shoppers at a stall run by Altrincham and Bowdon Civic Society to mark National Civic Day on Saturday.
Civic Day was started last year by Civic Voice, the movement’s umbrella organisation People completed questionnaires about whether Altrincham should adopt a ‘sharing our streets’ scheme, providing flexible movement for pedestrians shared with slow traffic with minimal signage.
Passers by requested more housing above shops, children’s town centre play facilities, high quality shops, a town council, more public lavatories and a launderette.
People learned how the society was campaigning to protect Conservation Areas and to restore and adapt historic buildings such as Station Buildings on Stamford New Road.
Working alongside Bowdon Conservation Group, the Society had ensured the refurbishment of St Anne’s Home for residential use and saved surrounding woodland.
Continuing the work of the late Pat Morris, it had championed the building of a new hospital, which will be built on Railway Street.
The society also encourages improved public areas through tree planting, attractive street furniture and paving.
The stall displayed historic maps, scanned under the society’s Heritage Lottery Fund grant and sold mugs and fridge magnets decorated with historic colour postcards.
Chairman of the civic society, Judie Collins, said: “It was great to hear the views of both local people and visitors and to know they supported us in our aim to regenerate Altrincham.”
