Altrincham man sentenced to four months in prison for theft

AN ALTRINCHAM man has been jailed following the theft of a woman’s belongings.

Marc Kirvin, of West Avenue, appeared at Manchester City Magistrates’ Court today (June, 20) where he was sentenced to four months in prison.

Kirvin had pleaded guilty to theft by taking at an earlier hearing.

The court heard how Kirvin had been driving along Upper Brook Street on Thursday, March 29, when he saw a pair of shoes and handbag in the street.

Kirvin stopped his car, picked up the belongings and drove off.

The shoes and handbag in question belonged to 62-year-old Sarwari Ashraf, who had been killed while crossing Upper Brook Street that same day at around 9.50am.

Detective Constable Anna Rickards from Longsight CID, said: “The circumstances leading up to the theft are tragic and although Kirvin may not have known who these items belonged to, he knew they belonged to someone.

“Kirvin had no regard for his victim or the consequence of his greed.”
