Trafford Housing Trust names new building in memory of former Urmston community panel

THE work of a late community champion has been honoured by Trafford Housing Trust.

Community work carried out by the late Steve Leathwaite was recognised by the trust naming their centre in Lostock after the former Urmston community panel and trust board member.

The trust launched a competition to name the building when it opened in Urmston last year.

Dorothy Bolland, from the Lostock Partnership, suggested ‘the Leathwaite Centre’ in memory of Steve and his unflagging commitment to helping the Lostock community.

Marie Leathwaite, Steve’s widow, unveiled a plaque in his honour in the building on Winchester Road.

A cherry tree was also planted in memory of Steve in the communal play area near to the Leathwaite Centre.

Steve was a passionate and active supporter of neighbourhoods in and around Lostock.

Trafford Housing Trust’s chief executive, Matthew Gardiner, said: “As well as being a leading figure in the development of the trust, Steve was an enthusiastic supporter of community initiatives, and he gave up so much of his time to making Lostock a better place in which to live.

“Steve is fondly remembered by us all, and so the suggestion to name this new facility after him was supported by everyone. The Leathwaite Centre has already become established as part of the community here, and we will continue to try to work with the same commitment and passion as Steve always did.”
