SISTERS Liz and Lucy Salutini aim to mark their late mum’s birthday by raising £16,000 in a single day.

Helped by their friend Janet Agoston-Jones, the trio have called their fundraising effort ‘A Day for A Day’ since that £16,000 is needed in donations every day to keep St Ann’s Hospice open.

The date set aside for their charity day is Thursday, May 31, which would have been Andrea Salutini’s 54th birthday.

She was treated at the Neil Cliffe Centre, part of St Ann’s, before losing her fight with cancer in 2004. During her illness she insisted on returning home when Lucy reached her 21st birthday and, coincidentally, Liz turned 18 on the same day.

That same year when Janet was almost 18 she lost her sister Susan, who was 19, to cancer. She attended the day dare facilities at Heald Green during the final stages of her illness.

The three women, all from Stretford, also lost grandmothers who were treated at St Ann’s, a further reason to raise money for the hospice.

“We realise it’s an ambitious total and will be hard work but we’ve approached the challenge practically and are excited by the challenge,” said Liz, a trainee accountant at property management company Braemar Estates in Hale.

“We’ve got various events arranged throughout the day including cake sales, a dress down day, a sponsored bike ride between the hospice sites followed by a Candlelight Ball in the evening,” added Janet, a business development manager at Aviva.

“St Ann’s made such a difference to my mum and my family and provides free care to more than 3,000 people each year. We’re asking people to help us reach our target so we can give something back to the fantastic people who helped us through a most difficult time,” said Lucy, an accountant at PwC.

They are thankful for support from friends and colleagues who will be out in force at a glittering Candelight Ball at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester when the fundraising day reaches its climax.
