Kirsty's Royal appointment

Kirsty Ashton Kirsty Ashton

FORMER Trafford Young Citizen of the Year, Kirsty Ashton, has recieved her MBE for services to charity after a much anticipated and excited wait.

Kirsty got her hands on the award after raising over £98,000 for the When You Wish Upon A Star charity - one which is very close to her heart.

After a lifelong fight with neurofibromatosis (N.F) and scoliosis, Kirsty wanted to give something back to the organisation which funded a trip to Lapland - every child’s dream.

She has also written a book, ‘Kirsty’s Story’, which documents her life with the diseases.

“I went down to buckingham palace, I had a great day. I got it from the Queen, she was really nice”, said the former Altrincham College of Arts pupil.

“She congratulated me and asked me about what I’d done. I’m glad to finally have the award - I can show all my friends now and the people who have supported me.”

No disrespect meant to this lady but if people do charity work because they want to do something that is to just help others - why are they also quite happy to accept awards?. The cynical (not me of course!) would say they only do it get praise

Is there such a thing as true altruism? Whatever her motivation was she has done some good.
