CROWDS of visitors came to an open day at Sale Town Hall on Saturday to learn more about the history of the building and the services it offers.
More than 500 people attended the event, which was organised by Trafford’s registrars.
Visitors enjoyed talks on the history of the town hall by Pat Coulburn of Sale Civic Society, while Sale History Society offered advice about investigating family history and the registrars were on hand to give information about the services on offer at the building.
Businesses held stalls supplying wedding items such as bridal wear, flowers, chocolate, beauty packages, cakes, balloons, invites and favours; and there was a raffle and tombola offering the chance to win prizes from the stallholders while also raising money for the Mayor’s charities.
The Talbot String Quartet and vocalist Helen Rae played music in the council chambers, teas were served next to the council Chambers, and wedding cars were parked outside the town hall.
Mayor of Trafford, Cllr Jane Baugh, and the consort Dr Peter Baugh, supported the event.
Cllr Baugh said: "We really enjoyed the day, particularly having the opportunity to meet so many local people. One lady said she has walked past the town hall for 40 years but never been inside.
"What was really special was being able to talk to residents about the history of Sale as they have so many memories, even the bomb damage to the town hall. Everyone remarked on the friendliness of the staff, the beautiful art deco rooms and the fantastic exhibition in the Lauriston art galley. My thanks also go to the Mayoral charity committee who helped raise funds with a raffle and tombola for the Mayoral charities."
Executive councillor Alex Williams said: "I am delighted that this event was such a huge success. Sale Town Hall has so much to offer both in terms of history and through the many services the registrars carry out from the building. I hope everyone who attended enjoyed the experience.”
