Macular Disease Society runs training courses for volunteers

A NATIONAL charity is inviting Trafford residents to join them in campaigning on behalf of people affected by visual impairment.

The Macular Disease Society is asking for volunteers to join its Local Action Volunteer programme, aiming to ensure the views of people affected by macular disease are represented in discussions on the service delivery of areas such as low vision, health and social care and commissioning.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. There are many other forms of macular disease, including juvenile macular dystrophies.

The Macular Disease Society will be holding a free training course on March 13 in Manchester for people interested in becoming a local action volunteer or for those who simply want to find out more about the role.

The Macular Disease Society is able to offer the free training programme in the north west thanks to help from the Big Lottery Fund.

Jon Rich, Macular Disease Society volunteer development officer, said: “We need local action volunteers in the north west to express their opinions, those of the Macular Disease Society and people living with central vision loss.

“The role requires people to take part in local consultation events or meetings to help shape and influence service delivery. It’s vital the voice of people living with macular disease is heard when decisions are being made that directly affect them.

“Those involved in the scheme will have the opportunity to learn new skills, meet people and most importantly make a difference to the lives of local people affected by macular disease.”
