A WALK to remember – that’s the theme of this year’s Manchester Midnight Walk in aid of St Ann’s Hospice.

The popular 10km walk through the streets of the city centre has already raised £1 million since it started six years ago.

Organisers are hoping there will be more than 3,000 walkers for this year’s fundraiser on Saturday, June 16.

The charity’s flagship event takes in famous Manchester landmarks like Manchester Cathedral, Granada Studios, Castlefield and Manchester University.

Jayne Bessant, chief executive at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “We’d like as many people as possible to join in and make it a walk to remember.

“Whether you’re having fun with a group of friends, or taking the opportunity to celebrate the memory of a loved one, then we’d hope you think this is a night you cannot afford to miss.

“Many of those who take part have inspiring stories to tell about how St Ann’s has touched their lives and what the hospice means to our community.

“The five walks so far have raised £1 million and that money has meant so much to the running of the hospice.

“As one of the biggest adult hospices in the country we provide free care for more than 3,000 people each year so rely heavily on donations from the public to provide our range of services.”

The night begins with two hours of entertainment where walkers can enjoy live music, have their face painted and photo taken and generally bask in the inspiring community atmosphere before leaving Manchester Central at 11.30pm for the 10km walk.

This year’s event will give entrants a chance to honour the memory of loved ones with a Garden of Remembrance in Spinningfields where walkers can write a message and light a candle.

Registration costs £12 before March 30 and £15 after that date. A rate of £8 applies for walkers aged 11 to 17 and this fun event is popular with families.
