ALTRINCHAM’S oldest trolly boy is waving goodbye to work as he gets ready to retire - for the second time.

Arthur Heath, 77, from Brown Street, is a familiar face to many shoppers at Sainsbury’s on Lloyd Street.

For the past five years, the grandfather has gone above and beyond his trolly duties, helping customers load their shopping in their cars, guiding them across the road and bringing a smile to their faces.

But on September 30, Arthur will collect his last trolly when he takes a well-earned break and retires.

Arthur, a former engineer, first retired aged 70, but was bored sitting around the house so decided to work at Sainsbury’s - a job he says has kept him young.

“I got brassed off stuck in the house so I got a job here.

“This job keeps me healthy and it has saved me going to any keep fit classes!

“I am from round here and when I am at work I meet people I know all the time, it is a very sociable thing.

“The best thing about shopping is the customers and I have met some very nice people in the car park.

“I am sad to go because it is the end of an era for me,” he said.

Helen Roberts, from the store, said Arthur would be missed.

“He is a valuable member of the team and he is absolutely wonderful for his age.

“We will be very sad to see him go but I am sure that he will pop in to see us now and then,” she said.
