ELDERLY Sale residents have been left ‘broken-hearted’ by a Trafford Housing Trust (THT) decision to demolish their homes.

THT announced this week that 19 sheltered housing flats would be knocked-down to make way for a multi-million pound state-of-the-art extra care scheme.

The £8m complex, which will include 70 homes for rent and sale to older people on land at Atkinson Road and Palace Road, has been made possible by a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.

THT have said all tenants will be found suitable alternative accommodation while building work is carried out, will compensated for the move and will be eligible to move into the new development.

But the tenants, many of whom are in their late 80s and 90s, have been left horrified by the news.

Resident of eight years, Muriel Potter, 86, said the worry was affecting some tenant’s health.

“I’m very very upset. I’m broken-hearted at the thought of being uprooted from my home.

“It’s upsetting for all of us here, not just me, we are all suffering. We are like a family here and we look out for each other,” she said.

Widow Pat Bushell, 83, said the move would break a family community up.

“The community that we have got here we will never ever get anywhere else,” she said The new complex will mirror one completed earlier this year at Newhaven in Timperley.

Facilities will include self-contained one and two bedroom apartments, an on-site care team, a restaurant, communal lounge and landscaped gardens.

Jane McCall, director of Delivery at THT, said the scheme would help THT meet the growing demand for accommodation for older people.

“We understand that this is a difficult time for the existing tenants of Palace Court and their families, but the new scheme will be able to meet the future needs and aspirations of older people in the borough.

“We will work with our tenants and their families to support them through this period and look forward to welcoming those who wish to move back into the extra care scheme in the future.”
