TRAFFORD Council are reviewing security protocols at their temporary offices after a man shouted abuse at councillors during a public meeting.

Councillors were left speechless when the man stood up and directed an abusive rant at them during the planning meeting at around 7.30pm on August 11.

It was the first planning meeting to be held at Quay West on Trafford Wharf Road, the council’s temporary location while a multi-million redevelopment of the Town Hall on Talbot Road in Stretford, is completed.

The man, who appeared to have a grudge with the committee about a previous planning application that was not on last week’s agenda, shouted and swore at councillors.

He was then escorted out of the meeting room by a number of councillors before being taken off the premises by security guards.

Cllr Viv Ward, chair of the committee, said she was ‘gobsmacked’ by the incident, during which the man directed a number of insults at her, and agreed to review security protocols for public meetings held at Quay West.

Executive Councillor Michael Cornes said: "It is extremely rare for members of the public attending Council meetings to engage in this type of behaviour and this was indeed an isolated incident.

“Anybody attending out-of-hours meetings at Quay West can be reassured that there is a 24-hour presence on site, provided by the owners of the building, in addition to the Council staff present during meetings.

“We are also reviewing our protocols following our move to Quay West to make sure we have appropriate arrangements in place in terms of security."
