A FORMER lollipop man from Urmston has celebrated his 100th birthday with a special performance from Stretford’s Boys Brigade.
George Orrell received a surprise visit at his birthday party at Lostock Court from the 7th Stretford Boys Brigade, who treated him to a performance of Happy Birthday.
The boys marched around the court on September 26 while playing wartime favourites including the classic It's a Long Way to Tipperary.
Lostock Court residents and staff gathered in the court to watch the band and to wish their oldest resident happy birthday.
The Second World War army veteran had another surprise visit at his milestone birthday celebration, from an old work colleague and friend who he first met 71 years ago.
Fred Gibbon, 87, met George when the pair worked at a Saw Mill in Salford and Fred was George’s driving mate aged just 16.
The pair have remained close ever since and Fred is now George’s oldest friend.
George moved to Lostock Court five years ago from the Winchester Road home that he had shared with his wife of 51 years Elsie until her death 20 years ago.
The couple had no children, but George dedicated much of his spare time to Stretford children and was a lollipop man in Lostock for 12 years, helping youngsters cross the road.
Longevity seems to run in George’s family as his elder sister Lillian, who died earlier this year, lived until she was 103.

Urmston is in terrible need of shops ie a farmfoods, iceland, shoe shop, women clothes. And what is going to open right in the middle of Urmston in a prime position - another ESTATE AGENTS - Yes we definitely need yet another Estate Agents, they can sell the houses of people leaving the area in droves, as we have no shops. Who decides what type of shops Urmston needs - do they have dealings with all these Estate Agents, Building Societies, Takeaways, Restaurants etc. People of Urmston take up arms and shout from on high We the People of Urmston want some decent shops where we can buy produce! NO MORE ESTATE AGENTS, RESTAURANTS ETC.
