Old Trafford gang initiative praised at awards

THE Safer Trafford Partnership has been ‘highly commended’ at a national Local Government Chronicle award ceremony for its work in tackling violent gangs in Old Trafford.

The commendation was in the Safer Communities category of the 2010 Community Partnership Awards which took place last Thursday. Trafford's was the only shortlisted entry to be highly commended in this area.

The team is led by council officers and the police with support from other statutory agencies such as the Probation Trust, housing associations as well as local voluntary and community groups and cross boundary working with neighbouring authority Manchester City Council.

Gun and gang violence has decreased in Trafford year on year with gun crime alone reduced by 39 per cent, with further drops expected this year.

"We have achieved an awful lot over the past three years making Trafford an even safer place to live,” executive councillor John Reilly said. “We are now one of the safest metropolitan areas to live in England and are aiming to continually improve our performance on reducing crime.

"Eliminating violent crime is a tough challenge, however, the structured interventions we have in place are evidently making a real difference.”
