THAWING temperatures have led to an increase in the number of flooded properties across the region.
A number of homes have been severely damaged by pipes which froze during last week’s severe weather conditions.
Frozen water causes pipes to expand and break, which creates leaks and floods when the ice thaws.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice for residents who have frozen pipes in their homes.
First, the main water stop tap should be located and isolated, then the tap nearest to the part of the frozen pipe should be opened.
A plumber should be called to fix the leak and the fire service should only be contacted in emergencies.
