STAFF and regulars at Sale’s Slug and Lettuce have completed a gruelling two-day cycle leg to Afghanistan - all from the comfort of the bar.
General manager, Matthew Hancox installed an exercise bike in the bar on School Road and invited customers to help his staff cycle 150 miles to raise more than £60 for the armed forces disability charity, Help for Heroes.
“The Sale Slug and Lettuce is one of 17 across the north to take part in the fundraiser. Between all the bars we plan to cycle 3,583 miles, which is the distance from our bar in Leeds to Kabul in Afghanistan. It seemed a fitting challenge, given the cause,” said Matthew.
“Our customers really got behind us. There was a great atmosphere on the night and it seemed to capture people’s imagination.”
The exercise bike is being moved between the participating bars and will arrive at the Altrincham Slug and Lettuce on Stamford New Road on November 26.
The tour, which started in Edinburgh, has also taken in Newcastle, Durham, Harrogate, York, Leeds, Lincoln, Manchester, Wilmslow, Chester and Liverpool. It will end on the Isle of Man on November 30.
