Altrincham man joins US congress think tank

A SUCCESSFUL businessman from Altrincham has a role on a body that has the attention of the most powerful man in the world - US President Barack Obama.

Carlton Mappin has just been appointed to an economic think tank set up to advise the United States Congress, and the appointment sees him join other high flyers from the business world.

The 64-year-old was appointed to the advisory board of the Jobs and Prosperity Task Force by Newt Gingrich, one of the country’s leading political figures.

The body was set up to help turn around America’s economic fortunes and the entrepreneur said he was honoured to be asked to join the organisation by a man he’d admired for many years.

“The position is on a bi-partisan committee of private small business people who are accustomed to dealing with the daily cut and thrust of business.

"Together we are charged to offer sensible employment oriented proposals to the Congress of the USA. The committee is purely advisory,” he said.

Carlton started his career in the research and development office at Linotype Machinery in Broadheath, Altrincham, in the late 60s. He went to America in 1974 after he’d joined the Leeds based firm Howson-Algraphy as an overseas sales and technical rep.

In 1996, Carlton, who now lives in Somers, Connecticut, opened his first company, Process Solutions Inc. Seven years later he opened his second company, US Fluids Inc, which started making industrial coolants and lubricants.

Carlton, who attended what is now New Wellington School in Timperley, hopes his story will inspire others to similar success.

He said he misses his family back home in Trafford - but doesn’t miss the Briitish weather.

“The UK is still a very classy place and the Altrincham/Bowdon area still has a magical appeal to me. It’s where I was born and raised and it’s where I was educated. I always love coming home but I also love the USA and its wonderfully generous and kind people,” he said.
