World’s blind land speed record holder Mike Newman, from Sale, Trafford takes up position at Vision charity

THE world’s blind land speed record holder - who is from Sale - has become a patron of charity that benefits visually impaired and dyslexic children.

Mike Newman’s first official role with the Vision Charity was at the launch of an exciting new relationship between it and Kingston Technology, which manufactures memory products and has agreed to donate a percentage of sales from their photo and video range to Vision.

This partnership will be formally announced at the annual Vision Fantasy Fashion Show on September 24 in London.

Mike, three times winner and current holder of the blind solo land speed record, joins the likes of Katie Price, Melanie Sykes, Kara Tointon and Nicholas Parsons as patrons of the charity.

The aim of Vision is to raise money for blind, visually impaired and dyslexic children to maximise their potential and to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of their families, teachers and carers.

Larry Davis, executive director for Vision, said “Vision believes that Mike Newman, who is not only a record breaker but also a bank manager, is a great example of an individual who is maximising his own potential in life whilst helping to inspire others do the same.

“We are thrilled that Mike has agreed to be a patron as we are constantly aiming to initiate schemes such as SchoolsRadio.com and others so that children can really believe in themselves and maximize their potential, be ready for the world and have good employment opportunities.

“Mike is passionate about this and is an excellent role model.

“Schemes such as with Kingston will help to raise funds and our profile, which will help us to continue helping more children. We hope as many people as possible will buy their memory cards from PC World or Currys and do support Mike Newman in his next record breaking attempt.”

On World Sight Day, October 8, Mike will climb into his Keating TKR performance car and drive unaccompanied at speeds in excess of 200mph to break the existing blind speed record, which he set in 2005 and currently stands at 178.5mph.

He hopes to raise funds for his chosen charities, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Vision2020 The Right to Sight and Vision.
