Couple appeal for information about missing African Grey parrot

A BROADHEATH couple were distraught when their pet parrot went missing and have now offered a substantial reward for her safe return.

Beattie, an eight-month-old African Grey who cost £1,000, escaped through a bedroom window last Wednesday.

Alan Kelly, 66, and Ann Mander, 40, of Sinderland Road, have since contacted the police, the RSPCA, pet shops and a number of veterinary practices across the area.

Alan said: “I’m both retired and disabled so when Ann goes to work I’m at home on my own so my son James bought me Beattie for company.

“I really miss her. She’s very friendly and has her own personality. We’ve seen her grow because she was only a baby when we got her.

“She can say ‘hello’ and also mimics a ringing telephone.”

African Grey parrots are medium in size and originate from the rainforests of West and Central Africa.

They are regarded by experts as one of the most intelligent birds and in the wild they feed primarily on palm nuts, seeds, fruits, and leaves.

But Alan explained that Beattie was also partial to sausages and chips.

He added: “She loves her food and will eat anything, including chicken and ginger biscuits. She’s not allowed chocolate, alcohol or avocados though!

“We’ve been getting up at 5am everyday to look for Beattie. We don’t want a new parrot, we just want her back safe and sound.”

If you know of Beattie’s whereabouts call 0161 929 0813 or call Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 5050, quoting incident number MM/092328/09.
