Police believe Giuseppe Gregory was not gunmen's intended target

Robin Hood Pub, Stretford. Robin Hood Pub, Stretford.

A CRUNCH meeting took place as Messenger went to press after a 16-year-old school boy was shot dead in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

Trafford councillors and police discussed the ongoing problem of anti-social behaviour outside the Robin Hood pub, on Barton Road, where Giuseppe Gregory, from Ardwick, was shot on Sunday at 11.50pm. He died on Monday at 2.30am at Trafford General Hospital.

Police now believe Giuseppe was not the intended target, but that the gunmen were shooting indiscriminately at the VW Golf he and his friends were in as they left the pub car park.

Several casings were recovered from the scene and one of the bullets fired went through the window of a nearby house.

Before the shooting, three masked men had gone into the pub and were seeen to leave about a minute later.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson confirmed police were looking at CCTV footage of three men wearing balaclavas.

We want to work with police and the owners of the pub, which has a good reputation and is a friendly, well-run place, to try and eradicate future problems. I think people were very shocked that the shooting happened there

Cllr Steve Adshead

Cllr Steve Adshead explained he had already received complaints about disturbances after the pub’s weekly Sunday night discos, but insisted Stretford was still a safe place to be.

He said: “We’ve previously had complaints about disturbances in the pub car park after the Sunday night events and have been to the licensing committee about it.

“We want to work with police and the owners of the pub, which has a good reputation and is a friendly, well-run place, to try and eradicate future problems. I think people were very shocked that the shooting happened there.

“I want people to know we are on top of this and that we have their best interests at heart. We want to be able to relay the outcome of the meeting with the community to reassure them.”

Ch Supt Janette McCormick, said: “The community has been shocked by this murder which has also, of course, left a family totally devastated.

“Giuseppe was only 16. We’re very much focused on finding out who’s done this and what the motive is.

“This pub holds a music event every Sunday night. There are people who attend it regularly. It’s those people who go week-in, week-out who may know who is behind this.”

Robin Hood landlady Paula Gray, 44, said: “I was upstairs sorting out the till when I heard four or five gunshots. I looked out of the window and saw two men running away so I called the police and then we locked the pub doors.

“Earlier on three men had run into the pub as if they were looking for someone.”

GMP confirmed Giuseppe’s mum had received a letter of concern from police prior to her son’s death.

In November 2008 the family became aware that Giueseppe had been targeted by the intervention team and had been identified as being at risk of becoming involved in gang culture.

Giuseppe was referred to Manchester Multi Agency Gang Strategy and had been attending meetings and engaging with his key worker.

It is understood that Giuseppe had survived a shooting at the age of 13. In addition he had been arrested on suspicion of possessing heroin with intent to supply. No further action was taken so his bail was cancelled.

Mum Samantha Lewis, 36, said: "Giuseppe was my loving and beautiful son who was taken away from me before he had chance to fully experience life.

"He had a big personality and was loved by all who knew him. Friends looked up to him, family adored him and he will be sadly missed by all.”

Dad, James Gregory, 37, said: "To my son, whose life was taken away from us. Friends and family and members of the community are all grieving over your sad loss, Giuseppe.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses of the shooting to come forward. They want to know the movements of the green Golf Giuseppe was travelling in, with the registration MT08 MXY.

They would also like to hear from anyone who saw a silver Honda Accord private hire taxi, with the registration V797 LCP.

Three men, aged 18, 20 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of murder. The 22-year-old has now been released on bail until July 13 pending further inquiries.

The other two have been released without charge and are being treated as witnesses.

The MP for Stretford and Urmston, Bev Hughes, said: "I share the concerns that local people will have about this incident and Ch Supt McCormick is keeping me fully briefed.

“It is important the police continue to do all they can to reassure the community and target gang members accordingly.”

Giuseppe’s death is the first fatal shooting in Greater Manchester in 15 months and comes after members of the Gooch gang were jailed last month following trial.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 2025 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Awful news. Hope they shut this nuisance pub down now. The trouble caused locally from here is a nightmare. The car park is used by dealers constantly, there's always brawling and shouting and local residents have to put up with criminal damage to cars and property. Come on Trafford, close it down.

Your not wrong Milorni. Trouble down Urmston lane after the pub shuts. Kids using the car park as cruise central blasting music out of their cars, Taxis constantly parked on the double yellows outside the pub right next to the lights....

Just close it down.

Is this the fault of the pub? Surely if dealers are using the car park the police should be involved? You cant just close a pub down because there is trouble around it. The people that cause the trouble will just go elsewhere and it becomes a problem there.

I have to agree with northernsoul on this...

The pub is not at fault. If you close it down it will just become an un-maintained eyesore.

As for the drug dealing in the car park, is this a fact or just an over exaggerated observation?

As I said in my previous post, the pub is the problem. They have a disco on a Sunday night which then disgorges onto the streets. The fighting, anti-social behaviour and damage is caused by the pub's customers so how can it not be anything to do with the pub?? Local residents have suffered for years from this not just the dealing in the car-park.Yesterday afternoon and evening was dreadful event before the shooting.Sunny weather in Stretford means misery for us with the foul language and abusive behaviour of the beer-garden users. A lot of us can't sit out in our own gardens because of the idiots in the pub.

Milorni, I’m still holding everything you say as over exaggerated nonsense! Yes the robin doesn’t have the best crowd in the world, however it honestly sounds like you’re just whining for the fun of it.

Maybe you should visit them dealers? They might be able to give you something to chill out! Well if they actually exist that is.

tragic story but the Robin Hood owners have brought this upon themselves. for a good year or more gangs have been allowed to smoke drugs INSIDE the pub and nothing is done about it. i was in there watching the derby yesterday and i felt i was a stranger in my once local pub. get rid, before it becomes a trophy pub.

OK - maybe slightly over over the top NS on my part but as Dave1980 says..the Robin Hood has seemed to have always 'lived on the edge' in my opinion and I am quite sure it was only a matter of time before someting like this happened. It's a shame as in the day it's a nice pub and the foods pretty nice.

No problem, but then the Robin is/was the only half decentish pub in Stretford, so if shootings are happening there, and it has gone so downhill (have not been there for a while now) then we are all doomed! Stretford needs an awful lot of money spending on it but I have been asking for that for years now.

i was in the Robin hood yesterday for the Derby, i left in the afternoon but was asked to go back on the evening, i declined due to the bad atmosphere on a disco or Dj night when i have been there. It is common knowledge that there are drug deals done through the fence in the beer garden, ive also smelt weed in the pub, its blatant in the garden on a sunny afternoon. Its been ignored and this is the result. It saddened me when i heard the news this morning.

I know Northernsoul - money does need spending but it won't be in my lifetime. On the whole Stretford is quite a nice place to live, a great variety of housing and plenty of parks. Stretford is no different from most of the other suburbs such as Chorlton and dare I say Didsbury except for one thing... the Arndale. It has totally ripped apart the heart of Stretford and without it we would have a vibrant nightlife with pubs and resturants, shops open later..delis.. you name it. As it stands though, we have a couple of takeways and didgy off licences at night with nothing to do except drink at the best half decentish pub...which as it stands..isn't that good.

How sad such a younge life be taken in such a sickening way, many questions do need asking why in the pub in a gang but the lad did not deserve to pay with his life!!! Thoughts go out to his parents. However being a Stretford resident and a past regular of the Robin, it is very true thats pub is now the pits full of dealers / gangs / trouble, close it down, refurbish, reopen for local over 25s, no more so called music events aimed at younge youths. Take it back to being a good pub for honest law abiding residents to enjoy a night out, lastly get rib of the useless manager who let the yobs in in the first place!!

Another less druggie on our streets. where was his parents, why is a 16 year old 'boy' allowed out at midnight and in a boozer? Of course there is no police available, they were taken off the beat, if they were ever on it, to learn Urdu. Ask Superintendant Janette McCormack of Trafford Division!

According to the latest news reports, this lovely young chap was on bail for intent to supply heroin, his mother had been warned he was a gangster and his life was in danger.
How come this new info does not surprise me.
OK, a young life has been taken, but this guy was bad to the core.

If and I say if he was involved in drugs and gangs I have no sympathy whatsoever but one has to ask the question that if so many people are aware that this pub is a drug den why the hell haven't the police done anything about it. I suppose now they will have pcso walking past once a fortnight until it happens again then they may do something. It is the same old reasoning that the police are only looking for the big fish to grab headlines but they have not got the sense to realise that the small fish grow into big fish.

The staff ignored it,as far as i could see,the police too probably, after all, the lad and his friends were apparently known to police, so i doubt they were oblivious.Although there has been a notable police presence around this area today and yesterday. The pub and the road its on are still shut,i think its unlikely it will reopen.

I use this pub now and again. It has been my observation that since the smoking ban, so much noise, language and behaviour has migrated from the inside of the pub, to ... guess where? The outside! Now that's a surprise, isn't it?
The Old **** died, because of this reduction of patrons, I'm surprised that ANY are left open. I'm saddened, that the Government acts in this way, and acts surprised when things like this happen. The Robin Hood is NOT a den of iniquity, it's just struggling to survive.

Milorni says...
8:26am Wed 13 May 09

Local residents have had to call out the police regularly due to the fighting and screaming especially on a Sunday night but it gets to the stage where they often don't bother as there just seems to be a level of acceptance that that is what happens at the Robin. As far as I'm concerned, when you see dealing going on in the pub and in the car park and drugs being taken/smoked openly then that constitutes a "den of iniquity".

northernsoul says...
10:47am Wed 13 May 09

Once again law abiding citizens are seemingly suffering then at the hands of a few bad people, and the seemingly uninterested police. As Steak from Urmston rightly states the small fish grow into big fish. Small crimes should be stamped out, and as they have not and the pub and police have allowed drug dealing to go on in the pub and outside this has now led to a murder. If as many people have seen drug dealing going on and they have all reported it I cannot believe that the police have not done anything about it.

Easy to say close the pub down but then whats left in Stretford? Hardly anything to do there at the moment. No restaurants and only a handful of pubs. More and more pound shops appearing all the time. Customers, staff and surely the police must have known what has been going on at the pub in recent times. Turn the pub back into a olace where the old locals wnat to go back to as they have left in droves over the past few years. Raise the entrance age and make it a community pub again rather the mess it has become.
