Town centre upgrade into final stages

THE building of the first stage of Urmston’s town centre redevelopment is in its final approach.

The redevelopment of the shopping centre, called Eden Square, will offer a new car park with 460 spaces and is scheduled to open at Easter together with the library and additional community facilities.

In early March, Sainsbury’s will move in to the major anchor store to start its shop-fit programme and is due to open in May.  The first phase of shop units will arrive in summer alongside the first phase of 64 residential apartments and the new precinct linking Flixton Road.

The junction providing access to the car park from Crofts Bank Road is now under construction together with bus and taxi lay-bys.

Over the next few weeks the site hoardings will be taken down along Crofts Bank Road revealing the scale of the new shopping centre, which was undertaken by Ask Developments.

In addition a new sensory garden has been devised for Golden Hill Park while pavement upgrades, new signage, refurbishment of street furniture and additional bike parking areas are also planned.

A new marketing suite for the apartments is now on site and will open to the public in February.

It contains a typical apartment layout and will offer the opportunity for interested parties to discuss their requirements with the Ask Life team.  Existing buyers will be invited to look round the two-bedroom show apartment before the wider launch to the general public.

David Deacon, development director at Ask, said: “This is an exciting time for Urmston town centre. Last year, the construction work took a big step forward and with the steel structures now in place it is possible to really get a feel for the size of the development.

“We are looking forward to the opening of phase one, which we think will have an immensely positive impact on the whole of the town centre.”  Executive councillor Mike Cornes added: “I am delighted to see such progress being made on this development despite the current global financial situation. 2009 looks set to be an exciting time for Urmston. Trafford Council and its partners are committed to the future of our town centres and their long-term viability and we look forward to watching the progress of this development over the coming months.”
