Carols bag charity cash

AN Old Trafford charity celebrated Christmas with its annual Carols by Candlelight service at Manchester Cathedral.

The event, hosted by Henshaws Society for Blind People, raised more than £1,000 for its work with blind and visually impaired people across Manchester.

Kerry Firth, 21, from Urmston, who is visually impaired and has used Henshaws services, wowed the congregation with her amazing voice.

Henshaws chief executive, Nick Marr, said: “The concert was a fantastic way to start the festive season, with so much talent on show. The true meaning of Christmas was really apparent – giving to people in need with a compassionate heart.”

Coronation Street’s Sue Nicholls, who plays Audrey Roberts, has supported the event for many years and also entertained the 500-strong congregation with a reading.

Loreto Prep School performed the nativity, and festive tunes were blasted out by the Blue Coat School brass band.

And Henshaws own ‘Hot Spots’ musical ensemble, whose group members all have sight loss and learning disabilities, played an acoustic set.

Actor and current face of the Post Office, John Henshaw, came along to support the event and assisted in lighting the advent candles.
