FORMER Flixton resident Sarah McDonald Hughes is about to join a long list of international stars - by having one of her plays performed at the Lowry for the first time.

A Song For The Lovers opens at the Salford Quays arts centre next week and Sarah says the plot was inspired by a friend of hers who was having a tough time.

“I wanted to write a play about people who’d had enough and they wanted to run away from their whole life. One of the characters has severe disabilities and the play is particularly about his struggle to connect with people,” he says.

Sarah will also play the role of Catie in this three hander and says she’s both excited and nervous as she prepares to make her debut at a venue that has played host to some of the biggest names in entertainment.

“It’s absolutely fantastic what the Lowry is doing - opening its doors to companies like us. This is the first time a big, established theatre has welcomed us,” she says.

A Song For The Lovers was premiered at Manchester’s 24:7 Theatre Festival and has been revamped snce then. Sarah has a busy pen - she’s currently working on Main Road, a play about a character who is about a woman who is about to become homeless.
