In a flap over duck thefts

STAFF at Trafford's Society for Abandoned Animals are in a flap after thieves pinched their pet ducks.

The three prized birds - Parsley, Matilda and Jemima Jim - disappeared overnight from the animal sanctuary.

And the centre is convinced that their disappearance is a case of 'fowl play'.

The birds were taken from an area with a shed and pond that was created as a home for the birds.

Nothing else was disturbed at the centre, at Barfoot Bridge, off Dane Road, Sale.

Sanctuary manager Helena Brailsford said: "We are really gutted. They are part of the furniture here and are so nice to have around.

"We have put in a lot of time and energy to create a home for them.

"it is pretty devastating that we don't know what has happened to them."

She is particularly concerned about Parsley because he has just had treatment for an eye infection and his condition was being closely monitored.

The birds were also owned by animal care manager Andrea McClements and sanctuary trustee Rachel Sheldon.

Anyone who has any information about their whereabouts should call the sanctuary on 0161 973 5318.

Its a real shame that animals and peoples belongings can not be left alone and people think they can just take what does not belong to them...its infuriating ! i feel sorry for the people at the sanctuary who do such great work!!!

Also the jokey way in which the journalist reporting on this incident is uncalled for!(foul play etc)it suggests this is a joke and its ok for people to steal or harm birds, if it was being reported about any other animal, the story wouldnt have innuendos in it and if it did there would be an outcry from messenger readers!

Why are there 3 ducks in the photo and 4 names Parsley, Jemima, Jim and Matilda. Did anyone think to frisk the photographer on the way out?

There were 3 ducks but the caption is wrong - one of the ducks was called Jemima-Jim as we thought it was female (hence Jemima) and then found out it was actually a boy (hence Jim) - and no they didn't just fly away - they were locked in a shed over night, and they wouldn't have flown away anyway as their wings were clipped when they took them in. Someone, broke into the shed, and took them. Not a fox, as 1) there were no strewm feathers and the last time I looked foxes couldn't open bolts. Some of the comments are rather insensitive and just because they are ducks doesn't mean they are any less important to people than dogs, cats and rabbits. Although none of them belonged to me, they did belong to my colleagues and we are all very upset about it. One of the ducks was on medication at the time so if anyone did do the unthinkable, I imagine they were very ill as a result.
