Commuter chaos on M60

10:08am Thursday 8th May 2008

Traffic has returned to normal following an earlier accident on M60 clockwise between J8 A6144(M) Carrington and J10 B5214 (Trafford Boulevard).

THE Highways Agency was called out today (May 8) at around 8.35am after five cars were involved in a collision.

This resulted in the closure of the inside lane and hard shoulder for a short while.

A spokesperson said: "I understand that Greater Manchester Police were able to tow or move the vehicles to the hard shoulder and while an ambulance was called there were no injuries."

The Highways Agency's Regional Control Centre at Newton-le-Willows, headquarters of the North West Traffic Officer Service, set signs warning drivers that one lane was closed in that area but the road re-opened again at around 8.55am.

The spokesperson added: "This is a fairly typical rush hour incident on our urban motorways. Traffic volumes are pretty high during rush hour so the collisions tend to be low speed 'shunts'. While we cannot comment on the specific cause of this incident it is fair to say that a lot of similar incidents are caused by drivers driving too closely to vehicles ahead of them and not allowing enough braking distance."
