Market Dave update: Second teenager arrested

A SECOND teenager has been arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with a man who was found collapsed in Altrincham.
The 16-year-old boy from Broadheath was arrested today (May 8) and has been bailed until 19 June 2008 pending further inquiries after David O'Kell, known locally as Market Dave, was found unconscious in mysterious circumstances.
"The victim has suffered quite a serious head injury and we are anxious to know what happened. I would appeal to anyone who can help to come forward."

Earlier today police confirmed confirmed that Mr O'Kells' condition had improved.
Mr O'Kell is now stable but because of his age police said it will be a long process before he is able to make a full recovery.
Another 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of robbery on April 20 and has also been bailed until June 19.
At about 11.10pm on Wednesday April 9, police were informed that a passer-by who was walking along Huxley Street near Homebase had found Mr O'Kell, 67, lying in the bushes.
Officers attended and he was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital with a head injury. He was later transferred to Hope Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Inquiries later established that Mr O'Kell had been drinking in the Railway pub in Broadheath earlier on.
He is unable to tell police how he sustained his injuries and police are continuing to try and trace anyone who may have seen him at about the time he collapsed to establish what happened.
In particular, officers want to speak to three youths who were seen running along Princess Street from the direction of Huxley Street at about 11.00pm.
Detective Sergeant Andy Reynolds, from Trafford CID, said: "At this stage, we still do not know what happened or how the victim sustained his injuries. There were no witnesses or CCTV and there remains some mystery as to exactly what did happen.
"We still want to hear from these youths because they could be valuable witnesses and they may be able to help piece together what happened that night.
"The victim has suffered quite a serious head injury and we are anxious to know what happened. I would appeal to anyone who can help to come forward."

Dave is a harmless guy who dont do an harm to anyone. if the scallies round there did half the work this guy does in a day with his scrap cart it would kill them from exhaustion. a lot of people ,ike Dave so i dont think they will get away with it for long.

I heard today that Dave died this morning in hospital. I hope it isn't true. He has his own fan club on You Tube. This incident is just another sad sign of the times.Where ever you live be it council estate or hale village, everywhere has em, little knob heads who want to be "hard men" and they think that attacking a pensioner while mob handed will give them a big man reputation. Well all I can hope for is they catch these little muppets and put them in a cell with a couple of real hard lads who will make their (not long enough) fifteen years, a living hell.
Everyone who drank in the same pubs as Dave will know he could be a pain at times but I am sure that most of them would also agree that he was not deserving of this.
Dave was called many things over the years,most of the time it was just water of a ducks back to him, however there are a few words that do him justice..."Grafter" and "real character"

I have first hand knowledge of these failings, and could write a book on the terrible effects their failings have on the majority of law-abiding citizens.
There seems to be a streak of incompetence which runs through the department, starting with the housing office, and running through to the director of housing.
Unfortunately no-one seems to want to be accountable for these failings.
Obviously, we are awaiting for the full facts to emerge in the case of Dave O'Kell, a bloke, who lets face it, worked hard all his life, and was recycling whilst most of us were in nappies, but it wouldn't surprise me to discover Trafford Council has yet again failed us.

Anyway, I think the point to this story is that thee types of people should be helped and not held up as some type of lovable community asset. The man clearly has mental health issues and needs treatment in a special medical environment.

2) Stop blaming the kids. Kids dress and talk in ways that seem stupid to you, but they aren't a threat. They are bored. If a smalll number of them are violent it's no worse than the adult population they have learnt from. The attack may be terrible, but locking the kids up (or killing them!) is the easy part. Ask why they did it. Does society teach them to compete?
3) Why do people feel the need to write the same things over and over again? Do you have to perpetuate the sterotype that "local" people havent got an original or intelligent thought in their heads?
4) How many of you just thought he was a quirky amusement? If he is such a legend then why don't you follow his bloody example and stop wasting your time at a job you hate to buy **** you don't need?
I know I will get ill-informed, badly-typed hell for this, but who cares right? You're just suburban idiots who haven't got a clue beyond what the Daily Mail tells you. Go back to your safe bubble and never question what the millionairres are teling you.

I had to wade into two lads that thought it would be nice to take my bike off me when leaving a friends one evening.
I described them to my friend and he knew who they where.
Told me not to visit their houses as it would bring a war down on him.
Dave can be quite offensive to women sometimes but he is a long time citizen of this town. He was turned over by some lads back in the `70s, he has seen it all.

I live near Broadheath Council estate and don't think its that bad, at least compared to some of the inner city parts of Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. Not sure what is more of a problem, crime or the fear of it. We're lucky to live in Altrincham, as even though there are some horrible things happening from time to time, it has much going for it. The comments from all the well wishes on here show how many caring people there are. I know a fair few people in Altrincham, and I can't think of anyone really evil who would do something like this. I've been mugged (by some scallies of Wythenshawe) in years gone by, and know various people (mainly my peers) who've been victims of similar crime, but I still feel it is a nice to live. If everyone makes an effort to be a little bit more neighbourly, we will make things even better by building more community spirit. There are many people doing things for the 'greater good', but sit down and have a think what YOU could do to help those around you , whether it be the kids whose parents aren't giving them great direction, or the lonely pensioner isolated from friends or family. If everyone does a little bit, it will make a-lota difference.

I have lived in this town for fifty years and can make a good guess at the addresses of convicted scum who appear in the local press. As the addresses are published I can prove myself correct or not. I am usually correct.
Mobile phone robbers do not live in £300,000 houses. There are wealthy parents of vandals but not of thieving scrotes.
Most people on the Brow and Broadheath are law abiding but the places have more than there share of feral scum and to gloss over that is a mistake.

Kids these days think they are more important than the next and the "gangster" approach seems all the rage. If only they knew what it is REALLY like to be the GANGSTER! Well, I'm sure someone needs to be very careful now, they obviously havnt given attacking David much thought. Now they have a HUGE problem.They might have thought they were really hard doing what they did to an old man, it's the HARD MEN who have known Dave for years they have a problem with now and most decent Altrincham residents will agree, they deserve everything there going to get. Perhaps if these bored kids, had worked as hard as dave form the age of 13 years old, theyd have NO time to be "Bored".
No it's Much easyer to laugh at some1 who is perpared to push a cart in ALL weather and rob him of his Hard days Earnings. Moast people who KNOW dave as we have for 40 years,understand that he is a little excentric, but, he does a job that know 1 els in Altrincham Is prepared to do.
Hard work is obviously a mystery to Kids today. Pride, self respect and all the other Qualatys Dave has bieng a bigger Mystery to the majority of Youth today. if you have that much pitty "QGutterstar" why dont you open your doors to them?
I think the people who beat up dave should know start thinking of leaving altrincham, Town as they didnt think much when they took on the problem of beating up dave and leaving him on the road side in a bush with a blood clot in his brain. They also didnt think of the backing dave had of Altrinchams old school whitch are now comeing out of the woodwork and know "Boredom" is going to be the last thing on their tiny ill educated minds... you cant blame disrespect on Single parenting and boredom as some parents do. After allit is Bad parenting that causes ill manners, lack of self pride and disrespect not "BOREDOM"

Just txted my son in Australia about this, and he said the rumours have even reached him out there!! We used to live in Broadheath, and have known Market Dave for years, my 3 kids used to shout to him from the car window and when we were up the market.
I hope he's alive n kickin and will soon be back on our streets yelling "ROOOOOOYYY!"

I have done a lot of work with the youth of Broadheath and it is wrong to class everyone the same, there are some excellent teenagers in Broadheath.
Hope the cowards are caught soon. A few years ago an elderly man was mugged, he was blind and wouldn't hurt a fly, how would they feel if it was obe of their own.

These little darlings have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. Residents need to band together to make a difference, dont just sit and take the crap or rely on others to do it for you, form an action committee and make a stand.

When the law fails to tackle crime which directly affects them and they see the police and judiciary as impotent, the consequences are inevitable.
Let me ask you this - if someone came to your door and asked for a few pounds a week to have a group of people patrollling your area and tackling any 'anti-social' behaviour, would yo pay it ?
The answer is probably yes , because let's face it, you are not getting that sort of protection from the police are you, despite paying for it in your Council Tax ?
This is what I believe will happen in the not so distant future.

It looks like someone did this to you, the state of the streets around Manchester and the Uk in general are no longer a safe place to be, where the small minded thugs seam to get away with what ever they want, i personally am for a lot more server punishments to deter and hopefully give this little sh*ts some manners and respect, if not I hate to think where we will be in the future.
