UPDATE - A murder inquiry has been launched after the 20-years-old man shot in Stretford on Saturday night died this morning.

Detectives investigating Halton McCollin's murder are now appealing directly to people who were in the area when he was shot to come forward.

"This is the tragic loss of a promising young man who was on track to really make something of his life"

Supt John Graves

The 20-year-old promising footballer died around 10.30am this morning.

He had been rushed to hospital after he was shot in the China Gardens takeaway on Chester Road.

Since then Halton had been in intensive care fighting for his life with his family by his side.

Some of the comments left on this message board have been upsetting for Halton's family so a separate tribute page has been set up, please click here to leave your tribute. All tributes previously left below have been moved to this section.

His injuries were too extensive however.

Halton was born and brought up in Trafford and had been living in a flat on Seymour Grove in recent months.

Halton went to Parrs Wood High School where he worked hard and developed his love for football. He dedicated much of his time to training and playing the sport he loved.

He had a job working as a call-taker with Norwich Union in Stretford, and played semi-professional football to a high standard at Flixton FC.

On Saturday he had gone to the takeaway to get some food with his friends when he was shot.

It is believed that two masked men, one holding a gun, ran into the takeaway just after 8.45pm and a number of shots were fired. Halton was found bleeding badly from his wound.

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

Today Halton's family have paid tribute to a "loving" son, and have spoken of their disbelief that this could happen.

Halton's dad made the following statement: "Halton was a loving older half-brother to his younger brother and sister, who are only eight and four.

"I just cannot believe that this has happened to my son. He was such a thoughtful boy with a great sense of humour. He was sport mad. He was always either watching or playing football, and was totally loyal to his team and coach. I am just devastated that he's gone."

Halton's mother also described her shock at her son's murder, and appealed to the community to come forward and assist police.

"Halton was a very sociable person and was totally loyal to his friends and family. I am in complete shock about this.

"I really want to urge you to talk to the police if you know anything about who killed my son, or why he was killed. Halton would have wanted you to come forward and get him some justice. The police need your help. Please think of my son and do what you can."

CCTV footage from outside the takeaway, and the nearby Gorse Hill pub, clearly shows several people who could be potential witnesses to this murder.

Superintendent John Graves, who is working closely with the team investigating Halton's murder, said: "This is the tragic loss of a promising young man who was on track to really make something of his life.

"His footballing career had every chance of flourishing as Flixton was a good springboard for youngsters to get interest from bigger clubs. Now his family will have to live never knowing what he could have achieved.

"My colleagues investigating this appalling crime have viewed CCTV footage from the area and there are clearly several people present who are vital witnesses to this murder.

"You know who you are and I appeal directly to you to come and speak to us. I would challenge you to stay silent if you could see how heartbroken Halton's family are.

"For the sake of them, and for Halton, pick up the phone and tell us what you know. Your call will be treated in the strictest of confidence."

Anyone with any information about this shooting is asked to contact the major incident room on 0161 856 4159 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The shooting is the third serious incident in the last month.

A 23-year-old man was shot in the chest in Old Trafford on January 11 at about 8.45am.

The incident occured after the victim and a friend, had been sat in a Vauxhall Astra parked on Coleby Avenue when they were approached by a number of men and one of them fired a hand gun.

In an another incident a 42-year-old man was left in a serious condition after he was shot in the back on Washbrook Drive in Stretford on December 31.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Not that Im suggesting the gang tag that recently appeared in Stretford had anything to do with this, but the number of gun crimes occurring in Stretford recently seems worringly high. When small crimes such as the recent lead thefts are utterly ignored by council and police alike, other criminals will feel they can do anything they want and crime escalates to levels not previously seen before.

I have lived in Stretford all my life, but am sick of having my car vandalised or broken into. I work for what I have (which isnt much) and have a teenage daughter myself. My daughter does not hang around in a gang, roaming the streets so why are there those that do?? Crime in Stretford is getting worse who will fight for it to be stopped, how will it be stopped and when??

Stretford is not a bad place to live as in all areas the majority are good law abiding people. A lot of the crimes are committed by people coming from outside Stretford.Teenagers wander the streets because their parents allow them to. As someone stated crime is getting worse because the little crimes that are committed are completely ignored by police. I am not blaming the police here, rather government policy that does not give them enough money to do the job and sets ridiculous targets. There is no deterrent at all anymore, prison should be a feared place to go, not tvs and playstations. I have been mugged twice and been told theres nothing the police can do. The advice was to allow them to mug you and dont fight back. recently the houses on our street had all the lead removed from them. The thieves had the cheek to come back two days later to finish the job knowing full well the police were not going to be around. A letter to the commanding officer who I notice has just received an award elicited no response at all. What hope is there if the police and government arent interested in fighting the small crimes, small crimes yes, but these are the ones that affect us the most. it will only escalate until they start from the bottom of the crime scale up.

The Gorsehill Pub in Stretford is partly to blame for the gun culture and the gangs that hang around on the front of Chester Road. Lads on bikes are allowed to go in the pub even though they are underaged and these are the lads that are mugging people and intimidating the punters who normally go in the Gorse. I know for a fact that the lad who has been shot is one of the lads that hangs around with this gang. My heart goes out to him and i really do hope he pulls through as he is just a kid but is the law going to step up now and sort this ongoing battle out? no are they hell. It's been stated that the have heightened the police presence on Chester Road following the shooting but what use is that? Someone has already been shot, it needed doing months ago! The Gorse and Milton Close need bull dozing because that is where these people congregate. Its just a sad shame that this boy has been shot and it wasn't just a body shot he has been shot in the head so these brainless scum bags had intentions to kill, not wound KILL. Lets see how long they get in prison, 6-7 years max and out in 4 for good behaviour on a charge of manslaughter, its a joke. This country is a joke and there is nothing you or i can do about it. The do gooders at the top are the ones that need shooting, if you do the crime you do the time. Minimum 15 years for carrying a gun, 10 for carrying a knife even if you dont use it thats what i think. Stop banging people up for not paying their council tax and saying the prisons are full when it comes to locking up the real criminals!

I agree with the Gorsehillian. My heart goes out to the family that would of got a call early hours to say there son had been shot - every mothers nightmare. I also agree in saying that the Gorse pub is to blame for the congregation of all of the gangs, it is a place for them all to "hook up" and does anyone do anything about it NO they just leave them to it. I used to go that pub every single week and have been driven away from all of the gangs that are in there the name calling the square dancing just to get through the door. How can people say the parents should be aware of whats going on what you gonna say to your 16 year old son "you are grounded" I DONT THINK SO! The saying "you are what you hang with" is so true!

Gorse hill is a nice place with nice people. It's just outsiders have now decided to hang about outside and in the Gorse pub when they are mainly underaged. I know for a fact that pub lets people do drugs in there. If there's a place for these scroates to go with no hassle then thats where they will go and unfortunately it's the Gorse in this case. That pub has gone down hill. None of the regulars from my day will go near it. The china garden where the young man was shot is next door but 2 to the Gorse, if that pub was not there then i can guarantee that that young man would not have been where he was the night he was shot. Its not fair on the nice kids that hang around there as they are all looked upon as bad news when they are not. It's the lot from Old Trafford that have brought Gorse Hill to it's knees.

Its true what Macca says, Gorse Hill and Stretford are still decent places to live in. I am proud of living in Stretford. I just wish the council would sort out the muggings and now shootings which often are caused by people outside of this area. When I was mugged I saw the car they got into and it headed straight for Old trafford. Again on Milton close Im sure some of the families are law abiding families, you cant tar them all with this behaviour. As I and others have said there is just no deterrant to committing such crimes, as we have sadly seen with the case in Warrington recently. Prison needs to be a terrible experience, of course try and reform them but dont give them tv's and playstations! Some parents are a disgrace too for allowing their children to stay on street corners like this! When was the last time the council actually invested any money into Gorse Hill and Stretford?! Probably when they built that statue thing on the canal..........

to be fair i wouldn't feel safe walking down the street in Old Trafford or Stretford at the moment. Its true there has been no money invested in GH or Stretford. The youth club has been shut down but that was because people kept robbing the coke machine and the office and the staff couldn't stop the gangs congregating outside. I don't know the answer. Tougher sentences need too be put inplace, if the b4stard who shot this lad gets 7 years or less its a joke and to me condones their behaviour. Prison should be a place where they dread not a place where they look at as a stop gap to earn a name for themselves cos they 'shot' someone. big wow, i hope they are haunted for life and die in the worst way possible, bring back the death penalty i say, a life for a life! I have heard these so called gangs say things to the POLICE about other citizens like ' i might accidentaly come back with a gun and start shooting people, i will do ten years for you i will only be 27 by the time i get out and you will be brown bread' the police then just move these little specimens on rather than detaining them. The police need more power or this will NEVER stop. How many more lives are going to be ruined? I feel for the families because of their loss and hope whoever did this get what they deserve.

Yes it is a cruel world with some horrible people in, but despite all this there are people out there who do good, and want to achieve something that helps their community, people from Old trafford, Gorse Hill, Stretford. Its these that should be supported more by the council and the police. However there is still stuff for youths to, there are 100's of amateur football teams for one, cubs and scouts still exist however dated it maybe to some so you cant use that as an excuse for staying out late at night, mugging people, shooting people etc. Of course there should be a lot more for young people to do, but this wouldnt solve everything. The lack of example from these childrens parents and the lack of deterrant from the law is everything to do with it!

Well said Shi/J. I grew up with him when he lived in didsbury for years - would him actually coming from a different area make him seem less likely to be 'in a gang'? He was one of the funniest people i remember and he was a nice person & I can't believe this has happened to him. I don't think we should accuse him of anything or say 'he brought it on himself' until we get some real facts.
Can we point out that had it happened somewhere else, would this have been seen as an unprovoked attack? What matters right now is that people actually are thinking about the family and his friends that have been affected by this. He is fighting for his life.

its the same group of lads that go round on bikes, hanging outside the pub, captian cook and haydock close. lots of complaints have gone in and nothing is ever done. why are the parents allowed to keep their house and let this happen. why dont police have the power to charge them for loitering. walking round now is getting a joke. i used to live in old trafford and it was never as bad as this, when there was a so called 'dissing' it was a one on one fight and it was dealt with without weapons and you earned a **** sight more respect.

the people who done this are nothing but coward scum.

I grew up on Ashover Street in gorse hill, and i remember them times as the best times of my life. because back then it was so different. i dnt remember any gangs or any shootings. there was the occaisional mugging like a kids bike getting taken. but thats all. i remember the community being so close, everybody on the street and the surrounding streets knew each other, u could play football and ride ur bikes in the streets without fear of gangs. and i think my parents sensed the area was goin downhill, thats when i moved in 1999. but dnt disresepect gorsehill cos i'm sure most residents are like everyone else. and just want it to end.

The young man shot today is a work collegue of mine, although still young, he commanded the respect of the men and women he works with because of his sense of humour and genuine good manners, he's a great lad. And whilst it's difficult not to jump to conclusions, people should think twice about posting comments on larger social issues at this difficult time.

he was fired at because they had mistaken him for someone else. the people that shot him obviously arn't bright enough to even point a gun in the right direction.
These gangs dont care who they kill, 'the more the better' probably in their case, the more people they kill the bigger reputation they have.
is ridiculous, where are their lives going? No where. they'll be living off our money in council houses commiting benefit fraud when they decide their sad lives containing the exciting thought of guns is over.
the person that did this to Halton deserves every punishment unthinkable

I know very little about this area and its gangs, but I do know the young man who is fighting for his life. I taught him at the college he attended, and I was very pleased and proud for him when he found a job and it looked as if he was going to do OK. I got to know him quite well and he is a lovely, good-humoured and kind person.

For a while now, I have been thinking that it was only a matter of time before gang culture claimed a young person I know, and this makes me desperately sad and concerned. I know nothing about what actually happened here, but my heart goes out to H and his family and friends and I really hope he pulls through.

The saddest thing is that I have the feeling that this won't be the last time I hear news like this about one of my students.I worry continually about gun culture and young people, but even more so when this comes so close to home.

The police need to step up and make their presence known in Gorsehill. Don't tell me there aren't police officers sat in the station waiting for a call out when they could be walking the streets. Sentences need to be made tougher and Gorsehill needs cleaning up. Elaine is right, there will be more shootings as i don't think one life claimed in Stretford will be enough for the poice to step up and do something. Also this shooting may have a knock on effect as people will want to seek revenge because i know if someone gunned my son down i would want to get justice and lets face it you wont get it through the eyes of the law. I know that isn't a good thing to say and 2 wrongs don't make a right but retaliation would not happen if these scum bags actually served life for killinig someone rather than 6 years in a holiday camp with TV's, gyms and playstations! Prison should be feared, bring back the death penalty! Guns are to accessible for these kids and that is all they are stupid kids! My thoughts are with Halton and i hope to god he pulls through and people learn from this sad sad situation!

Even if these people are caught they could be out in 14 years. Nothing will bring this innocent boy back. Something has to change. Life should mean life.

Ring the police anonymously from a payphone or something just to make sure the b4stards are caught. If we all keep running scared this will continue to happen. Everyone says the police need to sort the community out etc but it's us that needs to do it and drive these scum bags out and put them behind bars where they belong. Halton has lost his life, not a few years in prison his LIFE! Anyone who doesn't step forward are as bad as the man that pulled the trigger in my book. There is a culture and unfortunately it influences kids. That's what they are kids, and the people who feed off them and sell them the guns etc. There are people out there who know who shot him and all the other unsolved shootings! Why don't you all join a new gang call it "COMMUNITY" and get these cowards, who will cry like babies to their mummies when caught! off our streets. They are nothing that is why they carry a gun!

RIP, Halton.

Unfortunately, there is no real solution to the gun violence which has started to happen in Stretford. A curfew on under 18s is impossible to police, and it would tar every under 18 with the same brush. In fact, the only ones who would be left out on the street are those who are most likely to cause violence and have a fake ID. Whenever one area starts to improve, it is inevitable that another area will shift into decline - simply because the gangs are being moved on.

Although I am not very familiar with the area, I have heard bad things about the pub in question, so a spot inspection could be in order.

The only way to stop the violence is to have riot police on every street corner, but that is simply impossible to do.

Young people are exposed to guns, drugs and violence on a daily basis now. An awful lot of games contain material which I consider to be unacceptable, TV has films which glorify violence - James Bond, anyone? -, and sometimes the parents are involved in gangs themselves.

To even start thinking about a feasible solution, we need to go to the root cause. As I have mentioned above, there are so many avenues for violence to reach people these days.

There will always be knives, guns and dangerous fists on our streets. The only way to guarantee that you're safe is to live in a secure building with shutters on every window and door, an alarm system which contacts the police and deploys them immediately, and to stay in there.

I may sound pessimistic, but it's the sad reality of the world we live in.

The comments from the uneducated, dyslexic i can only spell in text phone language, proves that one he/she does not fully understand anything about life. The comments section is about people regardless of their background or financial status in relation to a person losing their life to cowardly twats, who should do us all a favour and shoot themselves and rid the community of scum. The comments about youths hanging outside the Gorse gives me the impression that this person is one of them, and as far as the youths looking intimidating it seems to be a way of life around Gorse Hill. I agree with you stating that there is the possibility that these youths dont committ any crime, or it maybe that they have not been caught!!! By the content of your comments you don,t live around Gorse Hill so really you should shut up and stay in your pit. Once again people slate the police as they are the easiest people to target peoples anger at, when in reality the community and people should be coming forward and helping the Police capture these people, who have taken a young person life away. The police can only rely on information from the public, and it seems that this person making the comment about the car being involved in a previous incident, is holding back information that the police would need. So why don,t you do something positive instead of ranting about rich people and write something about telling people who probably know who has done this, and tell them to contact the cops.

It sounds like you have information that would come in handy to the police? Are you going to do your bit for Haltons family? From their 'height description' how would you know what height they were? You can't tell if someone is under/over 18 if they are wearing a hoody-apparently they were masked anyway.
There's nothing on here so far to suggest that anyone is 'posh and stuck up', everyhone is just asking questions and trying to get the truth in such a difficult time.
RE to johno, 'how do we know he wasn't in a gang?' Well if you would have read the comments from everyone who actually knew him including myself, you should realise this. Unfortunately not everyone can choose where they live with rental and house prices these days, its not fair to be so presumptuous because he lives in that area, or was there that night. When I have a takeaway it's usually whereevers closest to me, hence why he'll have been in there at a 'busy time'??!? To eat?? A few shots were fired, but the others in there were lucky. Had it been a 10 year old in the takeaway with his dad who happened to get shot, i'm sure you wouldnt say he must have been in a gang?

Quick solutions like banning 'hoodies', and making curfews for under 18's aren't the way forward. Who says that the people who did it were under 18? and a curfew of 9pm wouldnt have helped in this instance anyway-it happened at 8.45.

R.I.P Halton, you were always a funny, cheeky boy with a loud laugh. I'll miss you. Thought are with your big sis & rest of family.xx

I'm one of Halton's big sisters.

I'm grateful to the coverage that the media has taken with this incident and the quick, thorough work the local police are undertaking.
We do however need to know more.

Thank you for all the positive coments and prayers posted on hear, we know that those who knew him share our pain and suffering.

To those of you who seem to find gratification from labeling my brother a 'gang member' i can only pray that God gives us the strength to forgive you.

You, Mecca and others, had add insult to injury; I hope that nothing unfortunate happends to you and your loved ones, then people try to erradicate all the goodness of their character for you to bear witness to.

In my view it sterotyping and generalising people according to their race, appearance and percieved back-ground that has created the callous animals that decided to go get kicks out of ending an innocents life.

No-one who met him has a bad word to say about him.
He used to make us cry with laughter, never fears.
He made every day fullfilled and meaningful.
He went out of his way to bring a glimpse of sunshine to a cloudy day.
He was a centrefold of our family.
And most importantly he was as beautiful on the inside as he was on the outside.

Instead of (incorrectly) judging him, maybe you could pray for him.

At the same time ask God for guidance in your life as your negative voice needs to learn how to show compassion and love towards others.

My angel on earthe has transformed into my angel in heaven. Rest in peace my sweet little bro'

It is ridiculous to suggest a curfew on all under 18s when it is the minority causing a problem. Yes gun crime is worrying but it is worrying everywhere. Getting rid of the pub won't solve anything because they will find another place to go and it is not necessarily the fault of the parents that kids are walking the street, it is the lack of government funding to provide them with something to do. Obviously it is important to address the fears but the most important thing to remember is A YOUNG AMAZING INNOCENT MAN DIED FOR NOTHING. arguing about where we live will solve nothing R.I.P xx

My heart and soul goes out to Halton's family for their loss. I have 2 sons who are around the same age and they are not in any gangs they are are just boys who want to spend time with their friends and enjoy their youth. My youngest son came home in floods of tears on Saturday night as he too was in one of the takeaways and could easily have been in the same takeaway. He is still in shock and is now devastated to know that Halton has passed away.
He does not understand why so many black boys are killing their own? What is happening why is this happening? What on earth are they thinking about. When are they going to pull together and help one another instead of killing one another.
Start looking up to those boys that are trying to make something of them selves and stop the jealousy. Start working for what you want instaed of trying to take from those that have and reap the rewards. The majority of us as parents have worked hard to instil the right and wrong in our chldren and its the odd few that have not that are letting their children give the rest of the black boys a bad name.
Even though I did not know Halton I am deeply sadden that this should have happened to one so young and with a full life ahead.

Please let it all stop

Some time ago, during a conversation with my sister who is a recruitment manager at Norwich Union, Manchester, she told me about a lovely young man who she had recently offered a job to. She mentioned his manners, his appearance, and likability and I remember the conversation then moved to how nowadays, when one meets really, decent young people, how it takes you aback - because it is not really the norm anymore. A few weeks later, he approached her at work and thanked her personally for allowing him the opportunity.
Today, she sent me an e-mail here in Holland with the news that Halton MCCollin had died.

I write this for Haltons' family. His parents, his siblings and all the other significant others in his young life. If somebody, like myself, from another country - who has never met him - could have something like this to say about Halton, then the young mans life was too, too short - but purposeful. You did a fine job. He will be remembered by a lot more people than he realised - and from the people have met him (from selected threads above) they will all have been for good things.

Please, if possible, try to hold on to this, in your grief. We will pray for you all.

Thanks for taking the time to post here AAB. I really hope that Halton will be remembered as a lovely person who touched the lives of many people with his kindness and humour. I know that his classmates will be shocked and upset by this news, as are those who taught him. He made me smile every time I saw him, and when he found a job he came to thank staff for helping him. I have many fond memories of him.

His family should rightly be proud of Halton. They raised a fine young man who will be missed by many people. I don't think that there are any simple answers to gang-related violence, but one small thing I can do for him and his family is to continue to do what I can to make sure that the whole issue is discussed in a balanced and fair way in my classroom. That's a promise.

I am a very unsentimental person, but this has touched me very deeply. Halton won't be forgotten, and if one single young person thinks twice about getting involved in any gun-related activity like this, then that will be a huge legacy of his short life.

So what Im saying is that this lad was very unlucky, and nobody expecially a young chap deserved to die, its just unfortunate that in this society when a kid gets shot they automatically assume there in a gang and get tied with the same brush.he looked a lovely lad and I feel for his family.

Of course we lack confidence in the future generations, it is the youths of today who are perpetrators of a shocking amount of the violence in our society. Just look at the current examples, the older generation are afraid to walk out of their front door in fear of being attacked to a brutal extent by a little thug after her cigarettes or purse, as happened in Warrington this week with the 80 year old woman whose face was kicked in by a 15 year old. Parents such as Gary Newlove viciously attacked and consequently killed by groups of drunken yobs. Why on earth would we feel “intimmadated” by the older generation, do we see them trapsing the street brandishing knives, huddled in groups shouting comments at passers by?? I have the pleasure of knowing a member of Halton’s family who happens to be one of the nicest, funniest characters I have ever met and although I never knew Halton , I can only imagine from what people say that he reflects this mans’ personality in many ways. I am so sorry for what has happened and pray justice is brought upon those responsible.

I am so sorry for what has happened and pray justice is brought upon those responsible.

wearing sporty/designer type clothes listening to RNB/hip hop, and all being what I call sheep, they dont have there own tastes, and just follow suit, I hear all the time, chavvy types beating and picking on mosher/alternitive kids and to be honest you never hear of mosher types in gangs going round and shooting people

Can I just epress how deeply disgusted and dissapointed I feel towards all you hippocritical and ignorant people?
By using music and clothes to 'label' people you are joining a society which likes to over represent people, thus leading to these people being discriminated againt!
Whether somebody dresses in tracksuits or primark clothes, what has that got to do with an innoccent, truly loved young man being shot in a take away, when just getting something to eat?
You made a comment about rnb/hp hop music being an influence, well can I just state, i too listen to this genre of music, however, i do not hang outside pubs intimidating people, i am a post graduate student, studying towards a masters in social work. And I suggest you take time to listen to some RnB before you jump to conclusions and post irrelevant comments, as it does not contain violence, but love!
However, I did not come on here to respond to silly, immature comments, I am on here to express how truly shocked I am at Halton's death. He was an extremely friendly and loyal person, and although I only met him a few times, I am deeply saddened by his death, and he will be truly missed.
I suggest to the people wo are on here to judge and blame, to post your comments on a different site. Take five minutes and read your way through all the comments posted on this page...then put your selves in his familie's position...it's disgusting!
My love goes out to all of Halton's famly and friends, RIP darling

The problem has been developing for years.

The front at gorse hill was once local shops etc..what possesed the council to allow for so many take aways to be developed? You only have to look at other areas to see that they attract gangs of yobs etc hanging around outside.
The fear that these gangs instill in decent people means we all walk with our heads down not saying anything and having to put up the **** they create... sadly the loss of real strong working class communities that could have dealt with anti social elements means they pretty much do as they please

Firstly may I send my deepest condolences to Haltons family and friends, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
I never knew halton but I have seen him knocking around the area a few times and he seemed like a nice enough boy, it is always tragic for a young person to loose thier life but under these circumstances it disgusts me to my core that it was lost in this manner!!!
I have read most of the comments on this page and my feelings are very mixed, I am a great believer that you must not judge a book by its cover or sterotype people for what they wear or who they hang around with, and I feel that many people are doing so, from the reports that I have read it would seem he was a very nice lad, not everyone who hangs around on the street are thugs or criminals but simply have no-where else to go and have a laugh with friends. BUT, I must say that I also agree with some people as youths in large groups are very intimidating (and some of them are responsible for muggings etc in the area as my family have been on the receiving end and I have to walk past those people everyday) and with recent events I would not like to walk near large groups in daylight or in the dark and I am only 24!
But instead of pointing fingers of blame at innocent people just because they wear hoodies we as a community should be fighting for a better life for these kids and getting them off the streets into social clubs or something to that effect, speak to the kids and see what they want, they are our future, they could one day be the doctors saving your life, or the lawyers fighting for your justice, or in Haltons case the brilliant footballer who brought the cup home to England!
Even if this young lad was in a gang or anything else it doesn't mean he deserved to die like that, I have a young son and it scares me to death that he could end up with the same terrible fate one day.

As I sit here, I am experiencing once again, the extreme horror and disbelief I experienced upon learning of this terrible slaughter of dear cousin Halton, I wish this world was free of such things. Sadly, we can see that it is not. We have another angel in heaven, yet again, because of a man with a gun....how many more must we weep for ?? . My tears slide slowly down my cheeks as I write this, for this grief that is unimaginable...I can only imagine the *TOTAL DEVASTATION* Halton’s love ones are experiencing, because someone has taken away such an Angel in that manner.... "WHY????????????????

???????" can anyone answer that-- There is no reason why, innocence is always sought out by those who would do evil--and made to pay the price-- GUNS, ASSAULT WEAPONS the greatest menace to innocence. What real purpose do they serve, but to kill humans? In memory of your angel, among God as the most beautiful of angels, I pray that you, the family of Halton will know we weep with you...and pray that someday.............

this pestilence of killing beautiful children will never be experienced again ..... Love and peace to you. Pauline

David, Manchester. What a N**b you are. So if one of your friends was killed like this you'd be happy to let people thing he deserved it and it was down to gang crime? No we can't know where people are 24/7, but this does not mean they are part of a gang. I also knew Halton since he was about 4, and know he was a decent & friendly boy, who did so well at school and socially too. He didn't know 'bad' people. You would not think the same of another well respected family that you personally knew, so don't slate them. No one wants to hear your twisted comments you pr**k.

If you lot put as much effort into solving this area's problems and staying off the streets at night as you do slagging each other off maybe 'gang' culture might not be stereotyped and stigmatised as it seems to have become. It doesnt matter whether he was in a gang or not what people should be asking themselves is why should people be walking around with guns/knives in the first place? Only cowards hide behind weapons and until youths find something useful to occupy themselves with instead of being a blight on society then this will continue to happen. There are things out there for young people to do which dont involve sitting on scally bikes, wearing hoodies and spitting every 5 seconds just to look cool in front of their 'mates.' Get a job, contribute to society and stop being so pathetic. So to all of you who just come on here to debate whether he was or wasnt in a gang and the politics that surround this ask yourselves what we can all do to make sure this is the last tragic loss of a young life please.

I still stand by what I said earlier - theres no smoke without fire - and if the muppets (k in didsbury and david in timperley) don't understand what that means - will some one explain it to them. Anyway - I won a lot of money on the lottery at the weekend so it's good ridance to stretford, old trafford, moss side and all the other rough areas of manchester. I'm off to poland where judging by all the poles over here should be quite quiet x

Halton was my cousin, I last saw him on 9th January 2008. 10 days later he was shot.

I am totally devastated by this senseless killing. All you mothers and fathers out there know that receving news of your child being injured or killed is your worst nightmere come true. I can not begin to imagine how Halton's family are feeling. The killing must STOP ! Halton has gone to a better place and may he rest in peace
Halton's family will never get over this, only time will fade the pain. From your cousin Jacqui Green and family.

It is absolutely ridiculous to suggest that events leading up to this tragedy is the fault of any one area such as Old Trafford. It's time to wake up folks - this type of thing is happening EVERYWHERE! The only difference is that the inner city areas are highlighted more. It may be that there is more gun crime this side of Manchester, but elsewhere it's burglaries, rapes etc. It's time for the government, councils and the people who live in and around these areas to stop shifting the blame and talking about the good old days and to start dealing with the problem in hand that's happening here, today. Lets come together to sort these problems, instead of making comments that are not helpful and that will only gain in causing ammunition.

I agree, you cant blame one area, those responsable for this could come from anywhere. It needs to stop, I have no doubt the culprits will be found, it is then that their families suffer too. What must it feel like to think that their sons could do this to another human being.

I lived in gorse hill for nearly 40 years. I thought the criminal perverts would dissappear as a teenager in the 70's going in the gorse. Certain families and groups that were known to cause trouble but these perverts are still there on pub doors or driving taxis. A minority of mindless violent perverts. I moved in the 90's because this gang of adult perverts challenged me as individuals(ha!) with any schoolchild, drunk, or back up female getting the boot in. Ilived in that town for nearly 40 years. When so many people can act against me as a force which was very powerful it was time to move. The person who shot that kid is a pervert. He had the gun to do it. People living in rough places can find peace walking down canal paths or through parks but gorse hill and believe that they are safe vbut they are not.

So I wonder what is happening to catch the killer of this young man? Time is moving on and everything goes quiet. Gorse Hill is similar to moss side, hulme, old trafford and other areas. The majority of people living in these areas are decent. You cannot blame all the kids either. They just follow what they are told by adults they trust. Is this a fizzle out now for this crime against this young man as news moves to other areas. This should be constantly be in the local headlines until the pycho who did this is caught.

I believe that until we all stand together and talk with one voice "these animals" will continue to murder people; but we also need to stand up to them otherwise we maybe next. My heart goes out to Halton's family. R.I.P Halton and let the Angels watch over you.xx
