A MEDAL winning Olympic swimmer visited a school in Hale as part of their drive to promote healthy living.

Steve Parry, who won a bronze medal at the Athens games in 2004, gave a speech to year sevens at St Ambrose College about the key to eating well, exercising and his life as an athlete.

He said: "Winning isn't everything, it's not about coming first or winning medals. It's more about being the best you can be and achieving your own goals. I want to see happy, healthy children realising their own personal objectives rather than always sitting about watching TV or playing computer games."

The head of physical education, Nigel Handy, added: "We would prefer all our children to enjoy sport and develop healthy habits that will serve them well throughout their lives. Who better to instil this key message that Steve Parry who is a fantastic role model and eloquent speaker?"
