A MOTORBIKE gang terrorised parts of Trafford at the weekend, as a convoy of around 30 scrambler bikes tore through the streets at high speeds.

Witnesses reported seeing around 30 bikers speeding along Sinderland Lane and Common Lane, Partington on Sunday around 5pm, weaving in and out of traffic and mounting pavements.

Some of the bikers were seen pulling wheelies at oncoming cars, forcing traffic to come to a complete stop.

Police deployed two tactical unit vans and an unmarked car to Sinderland Lane in an attempt to catch the bikers and a stinger (a strip of spikes) was also used to stop some of the bikers in their tracks.

Several of the bikers suffered punctures to their tyres and fled on foot, abandoning their bikes in the road.

But police confirmed that no arrests have been made.

Scrambler motorbikes are illegal to ride on the road and have caused concern for the welfare of motorists and pedestrians on Trafford's roads.

GMP launched a specialist policing team in July last year to tackle the increasing issue of moped crime.

Inspector Harrison White of GMP’s Roads Policing team said: “Given this group’s illegal behaviour and the risk that they posed to members of the public, several tactics were deployed, including the use of a stinger that was successful in stopping several bikes.

“No arrests have been made at this point, however, the investigation is ongoing and we are doing all we can to catch these people.

"My warning to them is that this behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will catch you.

“We remain committed to tackling the very real danger that bikes pose. We have introduced an off-road bikes toolkit to help us work with communities to gather information and get the real picture of what is happening Greater Manchester.

"But I want to ask that the public remain vigilant and report any illegal activity to us on 999 if there’s an immediate threat to life or on 101 or via LiveChat if it’s not an emergency.”
