A GRANDFATHER who complained about the appalling state of a public toilet in Sale claims he was told by the contractor it had not been cleaned in three weeks.

Chris Appleton, of Hoylake Road, who took his three-year-old granddaughter to the public toilets next to The Square shopping centre and opposite Tesco, said he was appalled at what he found.

He explained: “The toilet urinal was absolutely filthy, as were both cubicles bowls and the partition walls and floors.

"My granddaughter said she didn’t want to sit down because it was so completely disgusting, even trying to wash my hands. It was honestly a total disgrace.”

Mr Appleton was so furious that he decided to contact Trafford Council, which told him he should contact Amey, the contractor responsible for cleaning toilets on behalf of the local authority.

“Quite honestly when I rang Amey, every department I was put through to said it had nothing to do with them and passed me on to yet another department, before I was cut off.

"I rang again and a woman who she was in charge of buildings for Amey said it had nothing to do with her but ‘Amey no longer had a cleaner but a portable cleaner who had been off for three weeks’.

“To my mind, it sounds like an appalling state of affairs, when nobody is cleaning our public toilets and despite other complaints which Amey to me, it was doing nothing to sort it out.”

Sale Moor councillor Mike Freeman said: “I am extremely disappointed that this toilet has been found not to be up to standard as it is in a very. very busy area of Sale.

“I will endeavour to find out why we have gone on to a mobile cleaning service, which is clearly not keeping these toilets in a fit state for people to use.”

Spokesman for the One Trafford Partnership said: "We’re extremely sorry that the toilets in Sale were found to be in a poor state.

"The toilets have now had a thorough clean and are being cleaned daily. We will increase how often the toilets are checked to ensure they remain in a good condition.”
