I had a lovely day recently at Longford Park in Stretford at the Armed Forces Family Fun Day.

The event was to commemorate the anniversary of the end of the First World War and to remember servicemen and women, past, present and future, with veterans associations, serving personnel and cadet units taking part.

It was nice to get a glimpse of the past with the vintage bus and the artefacts brought by the Imperial War Museum (North).

All that, mixed with fun and games, really made for a great day out for all who attended. Unfortunately, I was too big for the bouncy castle but it looked like fun!

Mayor Ross, the new Mayor of Trafford, was in attendance, along with his Mayoress, Anne Duffield, and it was nice to have a chat with them.

It was a pleasure to meet the organiser, Marian Daintree, who is vice-chairman of the Old Trafford Branch of the Royal British Legion and the Secretary of Stretford Lions, which organised the event.

Marian told me that this event was the fifth it has organised. The first in 2014 was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

It was so successful they were asked to do it again the next year and it has grown from there.

The Old Trafford Branch of the Royal British legion and the Stretford and District Lions Club help each other when they can. Both groups are small so by getting together they are able to achieve bigger things.

After talking to Marian, I then met the gentlemen representing Trafford Social Club, Ex Service Branch, who told me they meet on the last Sunday of each month at their club in Derbyshire Lane, Stretford, and the aim of the group is provide good companionship, friendship and welfare of ex-service men and women who served in the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy.

They also told me they are keen to promote ethnic minorities to join who served in the Commonwealth Forces.

After a good chat and a quick photograph, (and thank you very much gentlemen for the gift of a wrist band!) I then moved on to meet some of the members from the local mosque who were promoting Love For All Hatred For None.

We had a really good chat about Trafford and I learned about the great work the Islamic community is doing in raising funds for charitable causes and by volunteering in local community projects. They also very kindly invited me to the mosque for a tour which I have gratefully accepted and look forward to doing.

Thanks to everyone for your ongoing support of my column and positive comments and I look forward to sharing what I’m doing in the coming weeks.
