PLANS to convert the former Kellogg’s building into a sports and media university have been submitted to Trafford Council.

The University Academy 92 project is the brainchild of Class of 92 football legends  including Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

It will be a branch of Lancaster University.

The proposal is to develop the old Kellogg’s site, in Talbot Road,  Stretford.

The ex-Manchester United stars have joined up with Trafford council, development giant Bruntwood, Trafford College and Microsoft for the venture, which they say is a "new higher education concept".

UA92 is expected to open its doors in time for the 2019/2020 academic year, but will take up space in the building on a phased basis.

Planning documents stated: “The building will provide an innovative alternative to a traditional university and will offer access to education for residents, as well as direct and indirect economic benefits.

“The top two floors are proposed to remain in an existing B1 office use however, UA92’s occupation is proposed to be in three phases.

“The first phase comprising occupation of part basement, ground and first floor within a potential for growth up to the second and third floors in additional expansion options over the course of subsequent academic years.

“This will however depend on the commercial viability and success of the UA92 concept.”

Microsoft, one of the partners for the university, is also proposing to take over part of the first and second floors.

While there are no major changes planned for the building’s structure, a new landscaped entrance is proposed to face Brian Statham Way and the cricket ground opposite.
