A HIGH-TECH toilet has been opened at Dunham Massey to help people with disabilities.

The new facility at The National Trust site includes the accessible toilet with changing bench and hoist.

The special toilet at the Dunham Massey Estate, which attracts more than 350,000 visitors a year, was created following a partnership between the David Brooke charity, Stockdales, Disability Stockport and Closomat.

Located at the property’s visitor’s centre, next to the car park, the new toilet is in addition to Dunham’s conventional and wheelchair-accessible toilets.

It also features a wash and dry shower toilet, ceiling track hoist and full-sized changing bench for children and adults with mobility needs.

The hoist makes the transfer of a wheelchair user to bench or toilet safer for them and their carer.

Dunham Massey visitor and commercial operations manager Helen Matthew said: “The new room will be so appreciated by visitors who need to use it,”

“Such facilities are something we have wanted to provide for a while, and have only been made possible by the support of our stakeholders who have worked with us throughout the project.”

The National Trust’s equality staff member Heather Smith added: “I am extremely pleased to see this facility put in in place at Dunham Massey.

“As an organisation, we are aware of the importance these facilities. We have made some progress in providing these facilities elsewhere and I am looking forward to seeing this number grow in line with our accessibility work.”
