A RUNAWAY van demolished a lamppost and flower basket before mounting the pavement on a busy Altrincham street this afternoon.

One eye witness, who photographed the incident close to the junction of Railway Street and Regent Road, told The Messenger that it was fortunate that nobody was injured on what is normally "a busy street" opposite Altrincham General Hospital.

A North West Ambulance spokesman said: "We were called by police at 2.09pm and were on the way to the scene, but it was cancelled."

A GMP spokesman said: "We were called at 2.05pm. There was no driver at the scene of the incident but it looks like it might have been a faulty handbrake or that the brake wasn't put on and the vehicle had moved of its own accord."
