THOSE, including the Mayor, who attend the annual Brass and Voices concert at the Salvation Army in Ashton Lane, Sale, will, this year, enjoy an extra treat.

Not only will they hear Sale Brass Band, Sale Male Voice Choir, the Meadway Singers and Meadway Youth Choir perform, but also the treble soprano voice of soloist Oscar Fairclough, aged11.

He will sing Panis Angelicus which he sang for his Grade 5 singing exam and Pie Jesu which he performed two months ago at his school, Chethams School of Music.

Oscar, from Ashton-on-Mersey, joined Joe Agnew’s children’s choir when he was five.

His mother, Alexandra, said: “He loved singing in that small, talented choir.”

Oscar’s break came when he attended Be a Chorister for a Day (BACFAD) at Manchester Cathedral.

He said: “We did brass rubbing, had a tour of the cathedral, tried on robes and sang at a children’s evensong.”

An audition followed and he joined Manchester Cathedral Choir four years ago.

Christopher Stokes, organist and master of the Choristers at the cathedral, oversees rehearsals for two hours a day from Monday – Thursday, and for shorter periods on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Choristers attend five services a week including Evensong on a Saturday and Eucharist on Sundays.

Oscar has sung solos with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and at two RNLI concerts where he raised £3,000 for the Lifeboats charity.

He said: “I set myself the challenge of learning O Holy Night in one hour. I sang it in the cathedral and raised £500 for Children in Need.

Oscar likes singing because he can express his feelings.
