80-year-old woman fighting for her life after being hit by a car in Stretford

Shortly after 7.55am today, December 13, police were called to reports of a collision involving a black Ford Fiesta and a pedestrian on Barton Road.

An 80-year-old woman had been crossing the road near to the Co-op when she was hit by the car.

The driver, a 46-year-old man remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit for drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Barton Road was closed for several hours and has recently reopened.

Police Sergeant Jon McColl of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a serious collision that has left an elderly woman fighting for her life in hospital and our thoughts are very much with her and her family at this very difficult time.

“Our investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this collision is currently ongoing and Barton Road was closed for over four hours whilst investigation work was carried out.

“This happened at a busy time of day on a main road and I would ask that anybody with information contacts the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

“We are appealing for anyone that witnessed the collision or may have any CCTV or dash-cam footage to please get in touch.”
