A TOURCHLIGHT procession led by the Scouts and Guides of Urmston will launch a series of events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of St John’s, Flixton.

Third Davyhulme Scout and Guide Band will lead the procession from Wellacre School in Irlam Road to St Johns, on December 21 at 5:45pm, followed by Urmston Scouts and Guides carol service at 6pm.

A series of celebration days is planned for the church's milestone in the new year including guest preachers such as the Bishop of Middleton, the Bishop of Manchester, and former members of St John’s congregation as well as concerts and other community gatherings.

‘Cutting of the Turf’ to St John's in Irlam Road took place in 1967 by the then Bishop of Hulme, Kenneth Ramsey and the new, building was consecrated on March 30, 1968, by Dr William Greer, Bishop of Manchester, with over 600 people present.

Many events in the year are to be shared with St Michael’s, Flixton, the original ‘parent’ church of St John’s.

The Rev. Rodney Green, Associate Minister of St. John’s, said: “Our intention is that this will be not only about the anniversary of a building but of all that God has done over 50 years and does throughout our lives. St John’s is a community and family-oriented church which offers a welcoming and caring atmosphere to its congregation. Our special events will also be part of a national programme of Christian action in the community in 2018 under the banner of ‘HOPE 2018’.”
