ALTRINCHAM Kersal's second XV are through to the last four of the Brooke Edgley Specialist Technical Services (BEST) Trophy after a resounding 31-24 home win against Glossop seconds.

Kersal took to the field looking to avenge the previous week’s agonising league defeat against the same opposition and scored first with a try from Ismael Bashir.

Scores were exchanged back and forth, with tries coming from the returning Dan Quinn, assisted by Joe Kelly, and Jack Gallimore powering over from close range as the first half ended all square at 17-17.

Kersal knew they needed to carry on with their attacking play in front of a large home crowd and continued to build pressure with possession gaining penalties, powerful runs from forwards, notably Jordan Roberts and Chris Weighall, and the combination of Dave Coleman and Matt Tully pinning Glossop in their own half.

After a long stint in the Glossop 22, Kersal scored a try thanks to back-rower Seb Ellis going over close to the post which was converted by Dave Coleman.

With minutes to go and the scores tied at 24-24, Kersal's attacking pressure proved too much for the Glossop defence and fly-half Tully powered over the line from close range for what proved to be the match winning score.

On Sunday, the winning formula continued with some good rugby played by Kersal's junior teams, with the under-17s Colts putting in a strong team performance against Liverpool St Helens.

They produced free-flowing rugby to run in an unopposed nine-try haul and win 55-0.

The u14s won 28-17 at Wigan while the u13s beat the same oppositiom 60-20 on home soil.

On Saturday, the first XV visit Manchester RUFC, the seconds host Holmes Chapel firsts and the thirds go to Dukinfield seconds, all 2.15pm kick off.
