SHOPPERS and visitors to Trafford will receive an early Christmas present this weekend when the Council's 'Free after 3' parking scheme launches across the borough.

Starting on Saturday, November 18, parking will be free after 3pm in all council-owned car parks and on-street locations between Monday and Saturday, (parking is already free all day on Sundays).

The scheme, which will run right through until January 17, aims to help shoppers and visitors to the area save on their costs, while providing a boost to businesses by encouraging more people to Trafford's town centres and villages.

The start of the initiative coincides with the big Christmas lights switch-on in Altrincham, which takes place in the Stamford Quarter.

Councillor David Hopps, Executive member for Housing and Strategic Planning, said: “The build up to the festive period is a vital trading time for lots of businesses, and 'Free after 3' is just one way in which the council is working to support them. Whether you're local to Trafford, or visiting from outside the borough, this is a great opportunity to enjoy what our town centres and villages have to offer.

"The council is continuing to develop its town centres; we are working to reduce vacancy rates and are carrying out significant improvements to the public realm. The success of what has been achieved so far can be seen in how vibrant and popular our town centres are."

Council bosses say that whether you're heading into Hale, Urmston or Stretford, visiting Altrincham, or enjoying a spot of shopping in Sale, there are plenty of reasons to make the most of the council's free parking offer.

Green stickers will be visible at on-street pay and display machines across the borough and in council-owned car parks where the scheme is in operation.
