FIREWORKS were thrown at firefighters as they tackled a bonfire.

Crews came under attack by around 20 youths after being called to Cornbrook Park Road in Trafford.

It was one of a number of incidents in which firefighters came under attack.

The attack happened just after 7pm.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "When they arrived a group of approximately 20 youths began throwing fireworks at the crew.

"They managed to get away and no damage was caused."

Between 4pm and 10.30pm, North West Fire Control received 136 calls and attended 96 incidents, just over half of those incidents were small fire or bonfires. And between 10.30am to 8am, 44 calls were received of 34 were attended.

Around a dozen were small fires or bonfires.

In neighbouring Salford, crews were attacked by youths in Edgehill Close, after attending reports of an out of control bonfire.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "They had been to the same address previously following calls from neighbours who were concerned about the size of the fire.

"The bonfire was approximately 12ft high and deemed to be a risk so firefighters brought the flames to a safe height and gave advice.

"When they later returned there was no adult supervising the bonfire and as firefighters attempted to control the flames they came under attack from a large group of youths who threw what were believed to be glass bottles at the crews.

"Luckily nobody was hurt but the fire engine was damaged."
